Northern Arizona University offers scholarships & awards to qualified students, at the university level, at the CEFNS level, and within the School of Earth & Sustainability.

SES scholarships for academic and leadership achievement
Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, the School of Earth & Sustainability has a number of scholarships to offer to deserving undergraduate students in our programs. The deadline to apply for all awards is Monday, March 29, 2021 by 5pm.
Environmental Sciences and Environmental & Sustainability Studies Accordion Open
You can apply for any/all of the scholarships listed below using a single submission.
You will need to upload as a single PDF file:
- A 1 page essay describing your interests within the realm of environmental science/studies, as well as how you meet the specific selection criteria listed for the awards you are interested in.
- A 0.5 page description of how you would use these funds.
- Unofficial transcripts from all undergraduate institutions.
Environmental Fund for a Sustainable Future Scholarship
Amount of award varies: approximately $2,000
The Environmental Fund for a Sustainable Future Scholarship provides funding for junior and senior Environmental Sciences or Environmental & Sustainability Studies majors currently enrolled full-time and in good standing with NAU.
Selection criteria:
- Clear, demonstrated activism or research outside the classroom in environmental preservation, protection, and restoration
- Potential to make significant contributions to environmental sciences and/or politics
- Interest in and contributions to northern Arizona environmental issues
- Financial need
- Academic performance
- Must be continuing at NAU in the following year
Lisa Marie Jones Memorial Scholarship
Amount of award varies: approximately $1,500
The Lisa Marie Jones Memorial Scholarship provides funding for junior and senior Environmental Sciences or Environmental & Sustainability Studies majors currently enrolled full-time and in good standing with NAU.
Selection criteria:
- GPA of 2.5 or above
- Arizona residency
- Financial need
- Must be continuing at NAU in the following year
Bill Morrall Conservation Scholarship
The Bill Morrall Conservation Scholarship was established in 1983 by the Arizona Wildlife Federation to honor the memory of Bill Morrall. Bill was actively involved in the work of the foundation and conservation issues important to Northern Arizona. Past recipients may apply.
Selection criteria:
- U.S. citizen
- Undergraduate or graduate
- Enrolled in conservation-related studies
- Must be continuing at NAU in the following year
Geology Accordion Closed
The following awards are given to recognize exceptional undergraduate students in geology. Recipients are selected by the geology faculty.
Outstanding Undergraduate in Geology Award
Selection criteria:
- Anticipated graduation with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (A=4.0) or higher, and/or:
- Participation in departmental activities including research, and/or;
- Participation in extracurricular activities and/or volunteer work
Cree Family Scholarship
No application needed – selected by the faculty. Selection criteria:
- Outstanding geology major in their junior or senior year.
Vesto Slipher Award
No application needed – selected by the faculty. Selection criteria:
- Outstanding geology major in their junior year.
Research awards and funding
Did you know you can get paid to contribute to research projects at NAU, even if you don’t have any experience yet? You can be matched with a project and mentor to gain research experience through the Interns-to-Scholars program, or the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program. Depending on your stage in your degree, you may also be eligible for a Hooper Undergraduate Research Award (HURA), or a NASA Space Grant Internship (for projects related to earth sciences and climate change). For HURA and Space Grant programs, talk to professors with research interests similar to yours to find a mentor, or get help finding a research experience through the RAMP peer mentorship program.
