The TEGNA Foundation donated $15,000 to the Northern Arizona University Foundation in support of the Andy Harvey Broadcast Journalism Workshop. This program has been bringing more than 20 Native American high school students from across Arizona and the Southwest annually since 2012 to NAU. For a week, students learn about broadcast journalism while working in the School of Communication’s Media Innovation Center newsroom and HD studio.
The workshop is named for Native American NAU journalism graduate, Andy Harvey, who achieved national recognition as a multimedia journalist before his untimely death at the age of 35. It was Andy’s belief that Native Americans should tell Native American stories. The workshop embraces that idea by encouraging Native American high school students to consider careers in broadcast media, while recognizing that college is an achievable goal. 2018 applications will open on February 9 at nativeamericanbroadcastworkshop.org.
