Quarantine and Isolation Housing information for campus residents

Given the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, University Housing and Residential Life have measures in place to increase the safety and health of residents and the Lumberjack community. Our team understands that this may be an unsettling situation, so our goal is to make this time the least stressful as possible. This page describes what to expect and the available resources for residents as they are assigned to quarantine or isolation housing.

If you are unsure about what to do you can check the COVID-19 Exposure: What should I do? guide.

What to expect

First Steps Accordion Closed

Whether you need quarantine or isolation housing, a Care Manager will be assigned to help you with the process and be your main point of contact for health and quarantine information.  They will reach out to you within 36 hours of receiving a reporting form. In the meantime, there are things that you should and should not do.

  • You should monitor your symptoms and self-isolate in place, following Campus Health Service’s self-isolation guideline.
  • You should start packing items for your Isolation or Quarantine stay.
  • You should not go to work, class, church, parties, stores, or any public areas to avoid having contact with others.
  • Finally, you should not rush out for a COVID-19 test if you haven’t gotten one already; your Care Manager will help you address this.

Once your Care Manager reaches out, you will be assigned to either 10 days of Isolation Housing if you tested positive, or 11 days of Quarantine Housing if you need to take a COVID-19 test and await results. Your length of your stay is in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Isolation Housing Accordion Closed

Residents who have tested positive will be assigned to 10 days of Isolation Housing with an isolation roommate. Isolation Housing provides an on-campus solution for residential students to follow the NAU self-isolation guidelines based on CDC recommendations.

Isolation Housing Do’s and Don’ts

The Do’s:

  • Stay in your assigned building at all times except to seek medical care.
  • While other residents in the building have tested positive, university staff will be entering the building on a regular basis for deliveries, cleaning, rounds, and other tasks. It is important to keep others safe and minimize any risk of transmitting the virus. Always wear a mask when receiving deliveries or near others.
  • Expect a roommate within the first few days of your arrival if you are the first to arrive in the apartment.
  • Stay connected virtually with family and friends through online platforms, calls and texts.

The Don’ts

  • Do not leave your assigned building for any reason including, but not limited to, class, work, food, events, gatherings, shopping, etc. The only exception is to seek medical care.
  • Do not visit friends outside of your assigned building.
  • Do not invite others over to your room while you are in isolation.
  • Do not leave isolation until you are directed by Residential Life or Campus Health Services staff that you have been cleared to move back to your original assignment.

Please note that failure to comply with the isolation mandate places others in the university community at risk and is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Violations may result in an immediate, interim suspension from the university, removal from University Housing, and potential additional sanctions, including expulsion.

When can you leave Isolation Housing?

Expect to stay in Isolation Housing for 10 days. Isolation can end when the following criteria are met:

  • 10 days since symptoms developed AND 24 hours without fever (without using fever-reducing medication) AND symptoms have improved
  • OR if advised to do so by your medical provider. Your care manager will send you a reminder of your end date toward the end of your isolation.
  • If you never develop symptoms, isolation can end 10 days after your first positive test.

The CDC no longer recommends a test as clearance to return to class, campus activities, or work.

Quarantine Housing Accordion Closed

Residents who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 or who are awaiting test results may be assigned by a Care manager to ~11 days of Quarantine Housing. Quarantine Housing provides an on-campus solution for residential students to follow the NAU self-quarantine guidelines based on CDC recommendations.

Quarantine Housing Do’s and Don’ts

The Do’s:

  • Stay in your quarantine apartment at all times except to seek medical care.
  • Open your windows for fresh air.
  • Stay connected virtually with family and friends through online platforms, calls and texts.

The Don’ts

  • Do not leave your apartment for any reason including, but not limited to, class, work, food, events, gatherings, shopping, etc. The only exception is to seek medical care.
  • Do not visit friends or invite others over to your apartment while you are in quarantine.
  • At the end of your quarantine window, do not check out until you are cleared by Residential Life or Campus Health Services to move back to your residence hall.
  • Please note that failure to comply with the quarantine mandate places others in the university community at risk and is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Violations may result in an immediate, interim suspension from the university, removal from University Housing, and potential additional sanctions, including expulsion.

When can you leave Quarantine Housing?
