Animal care and use training courses

Dates and times will be set up on individual basis for labs. Groups of five or less are optimal for one on one support during training. Annex staff may consult with others to help training in their areas of expertise. All personnel must have completed and passed the IACUC quiz and turned in an occupational health assessment form.

Level I training is intended to teach basic techniques that will increase users comfort level when working with animals.  It will also increase knowledge of rules and regulations.

Security Training – This is required for anyone entering the Biological Sciences Annex (BSA) regularly as part of work or research.

Level I
This training will cover general rules and policies, animal handling, humane animal restraint (scuffing, palmar holding, etc.) and husbandry

• I – General facility rules / IACUC policy
• I a – Mouse
• I b – Rat
• I c – Frog

Level II and III training is intended for individuals that have completed level I trainings. These trainings will give individuals more specific experience on the project they plan to work on. All level II and III trainings will require multiple dates for training. Plastic models, anesthetized animals or unanesthetized animals may be used as part of each course.

Level II
This training will cover the following:

• IIa – Injections (IV, IP, IM, SQ)
• IIb – Bleeding techniques (submandibular, tail vein, tail nick, saphenous vein)
• IIc – Ear or web punching/notching
• IId – Oral gavage with Koken plastic rat

Level III
This training will cover the following:

• IIIa – Anesthesia (Isoflurane machine use and preparation of MS222)
• IIIb – Euthanasia (2007 AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia)
• IIIc – Oral gavage under anesthesia
