Novel Aspiration Catheter to Improve First Pass Effect
Description
Mechanical thrombectomy via a stent retriever or aspiration is a strongly recommended option to remove a clot in eligible patients. While the neurointerventional field has progressed dramatically in recent years, existing aspiration catheter devices suffer from significant limitations. This system provides an improved aspiration catheter device that better facilitates the aspiration of a clot during mechanical thrombectomy.

Potential applications
This device is designed to improve the efficiency of ischemic stroke treatment and has the potential to improve clinical outcomes by alleviating multiple pass attempts and clot fragmentation.
Benefits and advantages
Unlike the current aspiration catheter devices, this aspiration catheter device has a radially compliant/deformable tip specifically designed to improve the catheter-to-vessel ratio (CVR), resulting in higher rates of complete aspiration with the first attempt which is also known as the First Pass Effect (FPE). The incorporation of the balloon into the design provides a mechanism for radial expansion of the catheter tip while simultaneously providing important proximal flow obstruction to enhance aspiration force on the clot.
