Multi-Room In-Home Harness System for Human Mobility Assistance

Description

The harness system may include multiple tracks that are attached to ceilings or walls in multiple rooms of a home, onto which a cart or trolley is attached. A harness configured to support an individual may then be coupled to the cart. A low-power motor system with a path-planning algorithm is incorporated into the harness to transfer a cart between rooms. The harness includes a body weight support system that will minimize the negative inertia and frictional effects of the system to provide comfort and body weight support to the individual.

Potential applications

Clinical applications to improve mobility.

Benefits and advantages

Conventionally, harness systems have been used to support individuals with limited mobility. However, conventional harness systems have been restrictive as they only offer mobility to an individual within a single room or location in a single room. It is desirable to improve harness systems by offering mobility throughout multiple rooms or an entire home. The harness system will provide those with limited mobility more freedom and independence, as well as encourage individuals to walk more, leading to improved health and accelerated recovery for some individuals.
