Methods, Kits, and Compositions Useful in the Detection of MRSA
Description
The invention provides multiplex assays, methods, and kits to detect and confirm the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as well as variants. The variants include methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (MRCNS), and methicillin-resistance Staphylococcusepidermidis (MRSE). Using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), oligonucleotides are used as primers and probes for the presence or absence of the target(s).

Potential applications
Clinical applications for hospital-acquired or community-associated infections.
Benefits and advantages
The invention comprises assays that identify and differentiate MRSA, MSSA, MRSE, MSSE, MRCNS, and MSCNS in a sample with high specificity and selectivity. With a high level of accuracy, the invention rapidly identifies MRSA colonization among patients and healthcare workers. Current technologies, such as culturing, are time-consuming. Along with colonization screening, the assay can be used for infection diagnosis.
