Welcome to NAU! Announcing a reimagined orientation experience for new students
NAU is changing how we do New Student Orientation to make sure all of our students get the full Lumberjack experience from day one.
Starting with the incoming class this fall, new freshmen and transfer students will do online modules over the summer followed by an immersive Lumberjack Welcome in the week before school starts. The aim is to get students excited about NAU and give them important information without requiring an additional trip to Flagstaff over the summer, which could be challenging for many students, including lower-income and first-generation students.
It’s all part of NAU’s culture of relentless welcome and strategic mission to radically increase the number of Arizonans who get an education that prepares them to enter the workforce.

NAU’s year of academic momentum—Highlights from the University Convocation
In the annual University Convocation Monday at the High Country Conference Center, President José Luis Cruz Rivera talked about NAU’s historical efforts to promote student access and success, starting in 1899, and how the university worked toward those goals in the last year as part of Elevating Excellence. He then pivoted to the coming year, laying out the roadmap for how the university will help prepare students for careers of consequence and lives of purpose.
Notes from the President (special edition): Oct. 19, 2023
Today’s message and charge is the first step in organizing, pacing, and prioritizing our work. To help contextualize and share some of the thinking that informed the ambitious goals set forth, I wanted to share a sampling of these reflections. I hope these will paint a picture that shows a community inspired to act and already doing great work to move the needle on all dimensions of student success. In addition, I hope these examples show how you can fit into the work ahead—no matter what your role or department.
