Reading and Vocabulary
The goal of this course is to prepare students for college reading and vocabulary. Topics of readings come from a variety of academic disciplines and students use reading to build on the academic and critical thinking skills necessary for entering the university. It is a rigorous, fully academic, seminar-style course with performance expectations reflecting those demanded of American college students. Students practice academic vocabulary skills such as using roots and affixes, identifying and using word families, and using context to understand a word and when it is necessary to consult a dictionary.
Listening, Notetaking, and Speaking
Listening, Notetaking, and Speaking courses teach advanced academic listening, academic notetaking, and academic speaking language skills through academic content. It is the advanced course that enhances skills and content knowledge considered necessary for university readiness.
Grammar and Writing
The goal of Grammar and Writing in Level 6 is three-fold: to improve language use accuracy, to increase fluency using the writing process, and to address college-preparatory level writing topics and requirements. This goal is accomplished by engaging students in: (1) instruction in the form, meaning, and use of various grammar features; (2) identification and correction of common grammatical errors; and (3) writing strategies for developing content and organization. Students are guided towards identifying their strengths and weaknesses as writers on a global (content and organization) and local (language use and mechanics) level.
English for Specific Purposes
The English for Specific Purposes – Information and Communication Technology (ICT) course is an integrated skills course with an emphasis on listening to academic lectures and reading academic journal articles. The course provides content knowledge related to current trends in ICT.
