What Can I Do with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders?
Speech-language pathology and audiology are two professions that can be pursued following a B.S. in CSD. Professionals in these fields can assess and treat speech, language, hearing, and swallowing disorders in adults and children. Employment settings are diverse, and can include schools, early education centers, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, universities, and research labs. In many of these settings, CSD services are delivered within the context of a multi-disciplinary team. Job growth in speech-language pathology and audiology is expected to increase by approximately 20% from 2016-2026, faster than the average for all occupations (www.asha.org).
Career opportunities that might be pursued:
- Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)
- Audiology assistant
- Hearing aid or cochlear implant company representative
- Research assistants or associates in behavioral disciplines
- Public Health
- Social Work
With further education, one of these paths is possible:
- Speech-language pathologist (school, hospital, rehabilitation center, nursing facilities, private practice, university)
- Researcher in speech, language, or hearing science
- University instructor/professor

To receive a bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete at least 120 units of credit that minimally includes a major, the liberal studies requirements, and university requirements as listed below.
- All of Northern Arizona University's liberal studies, diversity, junior-level writing, and capstone requirements.
- All requirements for your specific academic plan(s).
- At least 30 units of upper-division courses, which may include transfer work.
- At least 30 units of coursework taken through Northern Arizona University, of which at least 18 must be upper-division courses (300-level or above). This requirement is not met by credit-by-exam, retro-credits, transfer coursework, etc.
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work attempted at Northern Arizona University.

The overall purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders program is to provide students with foundational knowledge of the biological, physical, behavioral and cognitive aspects of human communication. Courses cover anatomical and physiological aspects of speech and hearing, development of cognitive and linguistic communicative functions and related disorders, and aspects of professional practice.
Students who complete the program will be prepared for graduate studies in speech-language pathology, audiology, speech and hearing sciences, or related disciplines and careers.

- Integrate phonetic science with anatomy, physiology and speech and hearing science.
- Summarize normal development of motor, cognitive, social-emotional, and communicative development from birth through adolescence.
- Define the role of the speech-language pathologist and audiologist in clinical service delivery.
- Recognize the etiologies of various speech/language related disorders.
- Apply ethical constructs to educational and health care situations.
- Distinguish the roles of the speech-language pathologist and speech-language pathology assistant when working in any service delivery setting.
