Iraq and Afghanistan Service grant eligibility

To be eligible for the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants, you must:

  • Be pursuing your first bachelor’s degree.
  • Not currently be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant as calculated by the FAFSA.
  • Meet the remaining Federal Pell Grant eligibility requirements.
  • Have a parent or guardian who was a member of the US armed forces and died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after the events of 9/11.
  • Have been under 24 years old or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of your parent’s or guardian’s death.

How to apply

You must have a valid FAFSA on file with NAU and submit all requested documents listed in your To Do List on LOUIE. The Department of Defense will identify eligible individuals once the FAFSA is submitted. If you’re eligible, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will post the grant to your LOUIE account. No further application is necessary.

Award amount

The maximum award of the IASG is equal to the maximum Federal Pell Grant available for the award year, but cannot exceed your cost of attendance for that award year. For the 2024–25 award year (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025), the maximum Pell Grant award will be $7,395.

As required by the Budget Control Act of 2011 (the sequester law), award amounts for any Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant that are first disbursed on or after Oct. 1, 2020, and before Oct. 1, 2024, must be reduced by 5.7 percent from the award amount for which a recipient would otherwise have been entitled.

Renewal criteria

You must submit the FAFSA every year you are enrolled, continue to meet the general eligibility criteria, and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. Please be aware the federal government has established a lifetime limit for this grant of no more than 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) for eligible students.
