Eligibility for NAU students
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants are for undergraduate students whose parent or guardian died as a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service grant eligibility
To be eligible for the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants, you must:
- Be pursuing your first bachelor’s degree.
- Not currently be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant as calculated by the FAFSA.
- Meet the remaining Federal Pell Grant eligibility requirements.
- Have a parent or guardian who was a member of the US armed forces and died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after the events of 9/11.
- Have been under 24 years old or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of your parent’s or guardian’s death.
How to apply
Students are identified by the Department of Defense when they file the FAFSA and NAU awards the amount of that year’s full Pell Grant. For more details on eligibility and award amounts, please visit Federal Student Aid.
Renewal criteria
You must submit the FAFSA every year you are enrolled, continue to meet the general eligibility criteria, and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. Please be aware the federal government has established a lifetime limit for this grant of no more than 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) for eligible students.
