Types of financial aid

Scholarships

Scholarships are money toward your education that does not have to be repaid. Requirements for scholarships might include academic achievement, enrollment in a particular degree program, or financial need. Some scholarships require their own application (outside of the NAU application for admission). NAU offers a wide variety of scholarships to all types of students.

Grants

Grants are money toward your education that typically does not have to be repaid. They can come from many different sources, including the federal government, state government, or from NAU itself. In general (but not always), scholarships are based on academic achievements whereas grants are based on financial need.

Loans

Loans are money you can borrow from the government or private sources to help you pay for college. Unlike scholarships and grants, loans do need to be repaid to the original funder, usually with some sort of interest.

Work-Study programs

Funded by the government and/or NAU, work-study money is earned by a student through a job on or near campus while attending school. Work-study money does not have to be repaid.
