Budget Appeals (Cost of Attendance)

Northern Arizona University’s Cost of Attendance (COA)/Budget includes both living expenses and school expenses.  Financial Aid is intended to support a student’s cost of living while attending college.  It is also intended to cover only the student’s portion of expenses while working on their educational pursuits.

Please carefully review the following information before you submit a Budget Appeal. Please note the submission deadlines for each term (located on the Budget Appeal form).

NAU’s budget categories include:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and supplies
  • Room
  • Board
  • Transportation
  • Personal

Expenses that will not be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Credit card debt
  • Routine car maintenance
  • Moving expenses
  • Cell phone (purchase or bills)
  • Other students’ or family members’ portion of an expense

Please review your budget in LOUIE before you submit an appeal. Only expenses you incur above your allotted budget items will be considered.  To view your budget from your Student Center follow these steps in LOUIE:

1.) Financial Aid tile
2.)Financial Aid Summary on the left menu
3.)Cost of Attendance to select by aid year or term

Documents must provide the following for your budget appeal to be reviewed:

  1. Signed and dated Budget Appeal form
  2. Signed and dated personal statement
  3. Appropriate documentation that reflects you, the student, incurred the costs
  4. Applicable affidavits

Note: If your Budget Appeal is approved, you will be notified of any increased loan eligibility. There are deadlines for loans. Therefore, be sure that you understand and have completed all necessary steps to have your loan(s) awarded to your account two weeks prior to the end of the term.
