How to apply to the School of Nursing

The Northern Arizona University School of Nursing offers several ways to complete your BS in Nursing. In order to be eligible to apply to one of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, you must have completed the pre-requisites and liberal studies requirements. These requirements can be completed at NAU or at another approved institution.

Apply to Northern Arizona University

Before applying to the School of Nursing, students must first apply to NAU. If applying to the ABSN program and are a current NAU student, you will need to reapply to the university as a post-bac student for the summer term. If you have already been accepted, continue reading to learn how to apply to the NAU School of Nursing.

Code of Conduct

Any student applying to the Northern Arizona University Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (traditional, accelerated, RN-BSN; CEP, Mid-AAS, or PL) who fails to exhibit professional and caring behaviors during any point of the application process will have their application disqualified from consideration.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses states:

 “The nurse creates an ethical environment and culture of civility and kindness, treating colleagues, coworkers, employees, students, and others with dignity and respect….” (Provision 1.5, p.20)

 “Disregard for the effects of one’s actions on others, bullying, harassment, intimidation, manipulation, threats, or violence are always morally unacceptable behaviors.” (Provision 1.5, p.20)

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Accordion Closed

The NAU School of Nursing has begun to use Altus Assessments as part of our application process. All students will be required to complete the CASPer exam and Snapshot on or before January 15th for summer admission. For more information on the exam, registration, and cost, please read the CASPer information sheet. Please note that exam times are in Eastern Standard Time (EST) or Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Sign into exam 10 minutes prior to start time. The exam will lock as soon as the start time begins. There will be no exceptions if CASPer exam is missed due to time error.

**NOTE: this program admits 30 students to Flagstaff every summer (May) semester

Summer (May) application

Application open date: November 1

Application deadline: Priority deadline is January 10 with rolling admissions until March 1, 2023. 

Kaplan exam open date:  November 6

Kaplan and Snapshot deadline: Priority deadline of January 15. Kaplan and Snapshot are now due by March 14, 2023.

CASPer exam:  Available dates on the CASPer website

CASPer deadline: March 14, 2023


  • Must have a completed bachelor’s degree by the first day of the program.
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses with a “C” or higher (you may have the courses in progress in the semester you are applying). All prerequisite courses must be completed by the beginning of the program.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in prerequisite courses. Please note, the minimum GPA of 3.0 does not guarantee admission to the program. Most successful applicants have a GPA well above 3.0.
  • Proctored KAPLAN Admissions Exam The exam results will be used as part of the process of screening and ranking applicants (results will be downloaded by the School of Nursing).
  • Complete and submit the following for Nursing Admissions:
    • completed online application
    • upload official transcripts in Nursing CAS from each college or university attended with application
      • **PLEASE NOTE: You will also need to apply and submit an application for admission through NAU and complete NAU admission’s enrollment process.**  To apply to NAU, go to: nau.edu/admissions/how-to-apply
    • complete the Kaplan Admissions Exam
    • complete the CASPer Exam

American Indian Program, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Accordion Closed

As of December 2022, the School of Nursing has discontinued the Kaplan Nursing Exam for the traditional and AIP Nursing BSN application process. Applicants applying for the traditional and AIP Nursing BSN programs will now be required to complete the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam.

The HESI A2 Exam will cover the following subjects:

1. Anatomy and Physiology (A&P)
2. Grammar
3. Reading Comprehension
4. Vocabulary and General Knowledge
5. Math
6. Learning Style
7. Personality Style

Accelerated students for the summer 2023 application cycle will still be required to complete the Kaplan Nursing Exam.

More information about the HESI A2 Exam will be available in the coming weeks.

As of November 2022, the School of Nursing has decided to discontinue the use of CASPer and Snapshot for the traditional BSN program. Applicants for the traditional BSN program will no longer complete CASPer and Snapshot.

Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) Accordion Closed

  • You must apply through your local community college and its nursing program. Participating schools include:
    • Maricopa Community Colleges
    • Arizona Western College
    • Central Arizona College
    • Coconino Community College
    • Mohave Community College
    • Northland Pioneer Community College
    • Pima Community College
  • Only the applicants accepted to a participating Arizona community college’s Nursing program will be evaluated by NAU’s Advising team for further acceptance into the CEP.
  • To ensure prerequisites are meeting program requirements, students are encouraged to meet with their community college/NAU nursing advisors.
  • Students must attend a CEP Information Session prior to applying to the program at their participating community college/NAU.
  • Final determinations of transfer credits will be made by NAU admissions and participating community college committee members.
  • Application and acceptance to Northern Arizona University (NAU) School of Nursing is completed after eligibility into the CEP is determined.

Mid-AAS track Accordion Closed

The Mid-AAS program lets you work on your BSN degree while mid-way through your associates RN licensure and is part of the RN-BSN program.

  • Completion of the 2nd semester (or block) at a regionally accredited Associate Degree in Nursing program.
  • No more than three (3) deficient non-nursing courses, includes Liberal Studies, Diversity, and Pre-Professional courses.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 in pre-professional coursework. Any pre-professional courses taken outside the state of Arizona must be approved by the Curriculum Committee.

After your acceptance to the university, complete the BSN Mid-AAS application for the School of Nursing.

Option for Registered Nurses, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) Accordion Closed

Admission Requirements for the online RN to BSN

  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state where you will be doing your final project classes.
  • Will be required to complete all prerequisites and pre-professional requirements (listed below), but can take up to three classes concurrently with program if they are still missing.
  • A minimum of 2.75 GPA in all pre-professional requirements.

Admission Requirements for the online Personalized Learning BSN

  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state where you will be doing your final project classes.
  • Have completed the following five prerequisites with a 2.75 average GPA: BIO/CHM w/lab, BIO 201, BIO 202, BIO 205, & PSY 101
  • NAU’s Personalized Learning Program enables registered nurses to earn their bachelor of science in nursing degree through our fully accredited, competency-based, Personalized Learning online program. This innovative program allows students to set their own pace, and complete lessons according to their own timeline. With no deadlines and no set schedules, it’s the ideal online degree program for busy RN’s to advance their career.

For both the RN to BSN and the PL BSN you are required to complete all of the following prior to graduation from either program:

BIO/CHM, BIO 201, BIO 202, BIO 205, PSY 101, PSY 240, BIO 320, NTS 135, PSY 230 or STA 270, and NAU’s liberal studies and diversity requirements (or provide NAU with a completed “AGEC” certification).
