Nursing scholarship opportunities

• Student must be an enrolled full-time undergraduate student (12 or more credit hours).
• Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above.
• Must be an Arizona resident.
• Must submit a letter of recommendation and unofficial transcripts.
• Student must submit a narrative describing their background and how this scholarship will help them meet their educational goals.

Must be an undergraduate student who demonstrates financial need and who has been accepted into the professional portion of one of the programs in the health sciences field. Preference shall be given when possible to Native Americans (Navajo) if not already adequately funded financially.

Undergraduate BSN students at the sophomore level or above:

• Undergraduate who has completed the freshman year courses with an acceptable GPA for entering the Nursing program
• Financial need, as determined by Federal regulations
• Registered for a minimum of 6 semester hours (12 hours = full time)
• Preference for minority students who 1; express an interest in returning to their communities or culture to help their people (Native American tribal members, Hispanic, African Americans, Asians, etc.) 2; are bilingual 3; are first generation college students

Upper class RN-BSN completion level students

• Undergraduate at the junior level or above
• Financial need, as determined by Federal regulations
• Registered part-time or full-time (often single parents who work)
• Same preference for minority students as stated above
• RN status from an accredited AD nursing program

This fund shall be used to provide scholarships to students enrolled at Northern Arizona University that meet the following criteria:

• be at least 50% Native American belonging to either Arizona or Louisiana tribes only
• class standing of junior or above
• maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (where A = 4.0).
• preference given to those students who are preparing to enter the health sciences areas which include nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and medical technology

This fund shall be used to support minority students who are pursuing a degree leading to postgraduate studies in the health sciences or professions leading to the health sciences. The latter could include but is not limited to nursing, medicine, public health, dentistry, veterinary sciences, and the biological sciences. The goal of this award is to improve student retention and academic success.

This fund shall be used to support undergraduate Native American students although other minority students or any student with a specific need could be selected by a scholarship committee for awards. The student must be enrolled at Northern Arizona University as an undergraduate student. The student must have completed one semester (12 hours) towards a degree to be eligible to apply and receive a scholarship award. The committee will develop an application form that requires students to write an essay describing how they would benefit from the award.

This fund shall be used to provide scholarships to support students who meet the following criteria: an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Nursing; preference given to a female, single parent; demonstrates financial need; maintains a grade point average of 3.5 (where A = 4.0).

Established by a bequest of Arizona Hazlewood, a long time resident of Globe, Arizona and friend of Northern Arizona University alumna Marie Hachtel.

Established for Barbara Cline, a 1969 graduate of NAU’s nursing program. She worked for over 20 years in Flagstaff’s nursing community, at FMC and in a local doctor’s office.

Criteria: Dedicated and deserving undergraduate or graduate Northern Arizona University student accepted by the College of Nursing who has done one or more of the following:

• Acquired mature judgment
• Held jobs after high school
• Become divorced
• Worked as nurses’ aide and wishes to continue education
• Developed high morals and ideals of service

Established in memory of Betty Jean Laman by her family and friends. Betty Jean Laman earned a nursing degree after raising her family. She graduated second in her class and was known as a “class mother.” Betty Jean was killed in an accident two years after her graduation.

Criteria:

• Must be a deserving nursing student who has successfully completed the first year of the nursing program at the time this scholarship is received
• Financial need

Criteria:

• Student enrolled full time in the College of Nursing Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner Program
• Maintains a GPA of 3.5
• Arizona resident
• Demonstrates a commitment to the health of citizens in the state of Arizona and the desire to continue working in Arizona

Established by Dr. Lindquist, Medical Oncologist and Avatar Master, to encourage nursing students to explore the area of Oncology as a career choice, and to remind that as we give compassion to others, we must also remember to simultaneously give it to ourselves as caregivers.

Criteria:

• Full-time undergraduate junior or senior in the BSN program at NAU
• Maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above
• Financial need
• Preference given to a student with an interest in oncology

Established by her husband in memory of Dawn Fenski-Lopez. Dawn began her career as a manufacturing associate with W. L. Gore and Associates, a medical device manufacturer. She spent the next 22 years with the company, eventually working her way up to the role of Foreign Regulatory Affairs Associate. Dawn’s work inspired in her an interest in healthcare studies. She decided that returning to school to pursue a degree in nursing would broaden her understanding of the impact of medical devices on diseases and disorders of the body. Her goal was cut short when in 2002 she suffered a stroke which forced her to retire to focus on her rehabilitation. Dawn touched many lives in the Flagstaff community and developed lasting friendships with people from a number of different countries. It is in her memory and her love of life that her family created this scholarship. It is her hope that in some small way we can help others achieve one goal that she was never able to complete.

Established in loving memory of Eleanor Joan Kellis. Eleanor Kellis received her nursing degree from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Phoenix, AZ. Eleanor enjoyed adventure and helping others. She worked in a variety of areas of nursing and as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Children’s Hospital. She provided patient care at several hospitals and found her niche in Utilization Review. Joan’s father, brother, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law all received degrees from NAU.

Criteria:

Deserving nursing student, to be decided by the College of Nursing scholarship committee in coordination with the NAU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. No specific criteria.

Established by Harold and Marion Elliott as a tangible demonstration of their lifelong support and involvement in the education of the young people of Yuma, AZ. Both have their BA and Master’s degrees from NAU. Their devotion to education and loyalty to NAU translated into a number of volunteer leadership rolls for NAU. Each of them served as president of a major support organization of the university: Harold as president of the NAU Alumni Association and Marion as president of the NAU Foundation.

Criteria:

• Yuma enrolled senior undergraduate student or a graduate student enrolled in the nursing program
• Maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above
• Must show promise in their academic field

Memorial established for Holly Hart-Vande Veegaete, who was a nursing student, and for her son, who died in an automobile accident.

Criteria:

Must have completed the first year of the nursing program

Established by Brenda Dorman in memory of her son, Jory Dorman, an NAU Student and Flagstaff High School graduate who died tragically.

Criteria:

• Must be admitted into the College of Nursing at Northern Arizona University
• A Flagstaff area high school graduate
• Maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above

Established by Jean and Gilbert Sechrist, MD, in honor of their daughter Lisa Sechrist Lipke. The Sechrist family has a long history in the Flagstaff medical community. Charles Sechrist (grandfather to Lisa), came to Flagstaff and co-founded the Flagstaff Hospital and was a physician-surgeon. Gilbert Sechrist, son of Charles, was a prominent pediatrician in Flagstaff until his retirement. Lisa followed in the family’s footsteps, earning her nursing degree from NAU in 1995. She has been a nurse in telemetry, medical/surgical, and pediatric sub-acute oncology. This scholarship is to honor this tradition and support the health of our communities.

Criteria:

• Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate junior or senior in the BSN program
• Maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above
• Arizona resident
• Financial need

Established by Marge Maston, a 1989 graduate of NAU, to express her gratitude for the excellent care delivered by nurses, and to encourage others to follow the example of the nurses who work so selflessly and tirelessly to help others in times of great need.

Criteria:

For a full-time nursing student (12 credit hours or more) in good standing.

Established in honor of Martha Chapman. Martha was born and raised in Morenci, AZ. She received a degree in nursing from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. A former surgical nurse, she came to NAU when it was Arizona State College (ASC) in Flagstaff, where she was employed as the college nurse at ASC Health Center with Dr. Martin Fronske. She left the university and was employed as a school nurse in the Flagstaff public schools from where she retired.

Criteria:

• Accepted to nursing program
• Full-time student
• Must have a GPA of 3.0 or better
• A high school graduate from Northern Arizona (preferred)

This scholarship will offer (2) $5,000 Scholarships annually beginning in academic year 2019–2020 to students who meet the following criteria:

• Enrolled full-time in the BSN program on Flagstaff Campus;
• Arizona resident and US citizen;
• Junior or Senior level;
• Grade point average of 3.0 or greater (4.0 = A);
• A one-page essay that describes the student’s commitment to the healthcare needs of northern Arizona and his/her intention to work in the region upon graduation (Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, and/or Yavapai counties);

Students who continue to meet the award criteria may reapply for this scholarship.

If a selected recipient only has one semester remaining at the time of the award, they will only receive $2,500 for that semester.

This scholarship will offer (2) $5,000 Scholarships annually beginning in academic year 2019–2020 to students who meet the following criteria:

• Enrolled full-time in the American Indian Program, Fort Defiance;
• Arizona resident and US citizen;
• Junior or Senior level;
• Grade point average of 3.0 or greater (4.0 = A);
• A one-page essay that describes the student’s commitment to the healthcare needs of northern Arizona and his/her intention to work in the region upon graduation (Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, and/or Yavapai counties);

Students who continue to meet the award criteria may reapply for this scholarship.

If a selected recipient only has one semester remaining at the time of the award, they will only receive $2,500 for that semester.

This scholarship will offer one (1) $5,000 scholarship annually beginning in academic year 2019–2020 to students who meet the following criteria:

• Full-time or part-time student enrolled in the Concurrent Enrollment RN to BSN at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College;
• Arizona resident and US citizen;
• Junior or senior class level;
• Grade point average of 3.0 or greater (4.0 = A);
• A one-page essay that describes the student’s commitment to the healthcare needs of northern Arizona and his/her intention to work in the region upon graduation (Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, and/or Yavapai counties);

Students who continue to meet the award criteria may reapply for this scholarship.

If a selected recipient only has one semester remaining at the time of the award, they will receive $2,500 for that semester.

This fund was established to provide support to Yuma County residents pursuing a degree in nursing in the NAU/AWC educational partnership in Yuma.

Criteria:

• Resident of Yuma County
• Enrolled in NAU/Yuma partnership program
• Majoring in Nursing
• Maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above

Established by the Nicolls family to honor the character of Ruth and her life practices of demonstration of integrity and ethical life choices, while incorporating the ideals of community, commitment, and care within the healthcare profession. Ruth Nicolls taught in the NAU nursing program from 1979 to 2002.

Criteria:

• Undergraduate BSN student at the sophomore level or above
• Completed the freshman year courses with at least a 3.0 GPA
• Registered for a minimum of six semester hours
• Financial need
• Preference for students who reflect characteristics of ethic and integrity, people skills, volunteer work, community commitment and care, and are bilingual

Established by Lambda Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International

Criteria:

• Undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the nursing program part time or full time
• Financial need
• Minimum GPA of 2.5

As our senior population grows, the Peaks Senior Living Community wants to support RNs to complete their BSN degrees.

Criteria:

• Must be a registered nurse and returning to NAU for their BS in nursing
• Enrolled full-time at NAU
• Maintains a 3.0 GPA or above

Established by friends and family in loving memory of Corine Turner and Linda Davis, who were killed by a hit and run driver. During Corine’s career, she was a school nurse for Gila Bend High School for 30 years and implemented the Diabetes Prevention Program on the San Lucy Reservation. Linda, with her steadfastness, helped to build a successful family business and was a beacon of hope with her commitment to serve wherever she was needed. Together they volunteered their time at school and community functions. An annual walk is held in memory of the two best friends. Proceeds are donated to the scholarship to embrace the women’s “Pay it Forward” philosophy.

Established by Dorothy Morrow Warnock to support students in the pursuit of their nursing degrees.

• Undergraduate or graduate nursing student
• Enrolled full-time
• Maintains a GPA of 2.5 or above
• US citizen

One of the Army Nurse Corps Association’s major initiatives is the scholarship program. Its purpose is the support of nursing education through scholarship funding to worthy students who are US citizens in an accredited program in baccalaureate or graduate nursing, anesthesia, or related healthcare field.

Criteria: Students currently enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate or advanced degree program in nursing, nurse anesthesia, or related healthcare field who:

• are serving or have previously served in any branch, and at any rank, of a component of the US Army (active army, army national guard and army reserve)
• are not currently receiving funding by a component of the US Army (i.e., scholarship ROTC students and students receiving full GI Bill benefits are not eligible)
• as applicable have had an honorable discharge
• or Nursing or anesthesia students whose parent(s), spouse, or child(ren) is serving or has served in a component of the US Army

The Flagstaff Medical Center Health Professions Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time, Junior or Senior health professions or nursing graduate or undergraduate student in the College of Health and Human Services. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required, must be a US citizen, reside in northern Arizona, display evidence of commitment and service to health care and consider working at FMC following graduation.

Criteria:

• Majoring in an academic discipline within the NAU health professions
• Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at time of selection
• Must be a US citizen
• Must be at the junior or senior level
• Must be a resident of the Northern Arizona region
• Following graduation from the NAU health professions, the student is expected to consider working at Flagstaff Medical Center
• Must display evidence of commitment to health care field by either volunteer work or community involvement or similar contributions

This scholarship was established in Danise Barry’s memory at the ten year mark of her passing to carry on the spirit of giving and healing that so deeply defined her life.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate students enrolled in a nursing program at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Students may apply for one of (2) $500 scholarships. These scholarships are a one time award per person, and can be used for any academic books and tuition.
