How the College of Nursing supports Indigenous communities
Commitment to Indigenous health and education
NAU is deeply committed to supporting Indigenous and Native American communities. In the College of Nursing, we focus on eliminating health disparities and improving health equity for Indigenous populations. By forging strong partnerships with these communities, we aim to boost the enrollment and graduation rates of Native American students, providing an education that respects and honors cultural traditions.
Championing health equity and community engagement
Our graduates are poised to become community leaders, improving lives and healthcare quality in the Indigenous communities they serve.
Culturally informed nursing training
Our curriculum is enriched with lessons in behavioral health, community/population health, and the integration of Indigenous and Hispanic health traditions and practices, ensuring culturally respectful and effective care.
Nurturing success for Indigenous students
We go above and beyond to support Indigenous student success inside and outside the classroom, making every student feel valued in their nursing journey.
Unique pathway to nursing for Native American students
The College of Nursing’s American Indian Program (AIP) is the first pathway to an entry-level nursing degree for Native Americans. We also offer coursework in advancing health equity.
Financial and academic resources
We provide a range of scholarships, grants, and bridge programs designed to alleviate financial pressures and enhance academic success.
Comprehensive mentoring programs
Through formal mentoring, we guide Native American nursing students along their educational paths, offering encouragement and insight to help them thrive.
Community partnerships
Our strong partnerships with community healthcare organizations are shaping the practical training of our students. These collaborations help us connect with potential nursing students and ensure our students receive hands-on, community-based training that supports their transition into successful nursing careers.
