KAPLAN admission exam

NAU School of Nursing

The KAPLAN admission exam score is used for screening and ranking of undergraduate nursing applicants. You may only take the Kaplan exam once per application cycle. The exam must be completed in the cycle for which you are applying. We will no longer accept Kaplan exams from previous testing cycles, and the exam needs to be completed by the exam deadline.

As of December 2022, the School of Nursing has discontinued the Kaplan Nursing Exam for the traditional and AIP Nursing BSN application process. Applicants applying for the traditional and AIP Nursing BSN programs will now be required to complete the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam.

The HESI A2 Exam will cover the following subjects:

HESI A2 Entrance Exam Section Number of Questions Allotted Time
Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) 30 questions 25 minutes
Grammar 55 questions 50 minutes
Reading Comprehension 55 questions 60 minutes
Vocabulary & General Knowledge 55 questions 50 minutes
Math 55 questions 50 minutes
*Learning Style 14 questions 15 minutes
*Personality Style 15 questions 15 minutes

*Applicants are required to complete the learning/personality style questions within the HESI A2 exam, but the results will not be a factor in the admissions decision. The learning/personality style results will be used to support and guide learning within the School of Nursing program.

To help prepare for the HESI A2 Admissions exam, we recommend:

Accelerated BSN Summer admission: November 1 – priority deadline of January 10 with rolling admissions until March 1, 2023.
Accelerated BSN Summer Kaplan: November 1 – priority deadline of January 15. Applicants can take the Kaplan exam until March 14, 2023.
Accelerated BSN CASPer:  (once per month, 2x per cycle) see CASPer website. The last date to complete the CASPer and complete Snapshot is March 14, 2023.

Process of Scheduling Kaplan: Accordion Closed

As of December 2022, the School of Nursing has discontinued the Kaplan Nursing Exam for the traditional and AIP Nursing BSN application process. Applicants applying for the traditional and AIP Nursing BSN programs will now be required to complete the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam.

The HESI A2 Exam will cover the following subjects:

1. Anatomy and Physiology (A&P)
2. Grammar
3. Reading Comprehension
4. Vocabulary and General Knowledge
5. Math

Please see detailed  Kaplan Exam Instructions. Applicants can take the exam only once per application cycle

  1. Applicant applies to NAU
    • Receives NAU credentials – login and email
  2. Applicant has access to School of Nursing (SON) application with NAU login info
  3. Applicant applies and submits completed SON application
  4. Applicant schedules Kaplan exam date with preferred testing center
  5. Applicant sends request to register for Kaplan to SON
  6. SON will send applicant the Kaplan registration link
  7. Applicant uses NAU email to register for Kaplan. Applicant will create own personalized password.
  8. Applicant notifies SON via email that they have registered, sends date and time of scheduled Kaplan exam.
  9. SON will review Kaplan registration, send student a confirmation email and add student to the Approved to Test List.
    • Any reschedules have to go through both testing center and SON
    • SON has to enter rescheduled date
  10. Applicant shows up for the exam at least 15-20 minutes `ahead of time
    • Applicants will have 10 minutes after the start time of their test to login
    • If applicant misses test time, applicant will need to reschedule with proctor
    • If applicant ends test after starting the exam. Exam cannot be completed and Kaplan will not allow student to re-register.

Accelerated students for the summer 2023 application cycle will still be required to complete the Kaplan Nursing Exam

The KAPLAN test consists of 91 questions for a total of 165 minutes. The breakdown is as follows:

Reading – 22 questions; 45 minutes
Math – 28 questions; 45 minutes
Writing – 21 questions; 45 minutes
Science – 20 questions, 30 minutes

It is important to schedule the exam in advance to ensure a seat is available.
