Accelerated BSN Acceptance letter

Congratulations on your Accelerated BSN Program Admissions!

Now that you are admitted into the nursing program, you are expected to maintain a high level of academic performance. If you encounter difficulty with your studies at any time, the faculty can help you find assistance. A complete set of academic guidelines is in the nursing student handbook, which you will download from the school’s website.

Note: This page contains PDF documents that are currently in the process of being made fully accessible for all users. If you need assistance with accessible documents in the meantime, please contact Disability Resources.

Graduating and Becoming a Licensed Nurse

Your admission to the Northern Arizona University College of Nursing is no guarantee that you will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Further, graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is not the sole criteria for obtaining a license to practice Nursing in Arizona. Licensing requirements are the exclusive responsibility of the State Board of Nursing (Nursing Practice Act A.R.S. Section 32-1632, et seq.), and you must satisfy those requirements independently of your completion of any requirements for graduation from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Next steps

The signed admission contract needs to be returned via email to accelerated.nursing@nau.edu no later than 5 business days after you receive the contract. This will indicate your intention to enter the program and your commitment towards becoming a nursing professional.

For the Summer 2024 cohort, please submit your required clinical documents by April 22, 2024, to your Exxat account. For the Fall 2024 cohort, please submit your required clinical documents by August 5, 2024, to your Exxat account. You can start uploading the required documents in Exxat once you obtain access.

Please be aware that there are fees required for CPR training, fingerprinting, liability insurance, physical exam, and vaccinations, which are the student’s responsibility. Allow yourself ample time to obtain all of these items prior to the initiation of the program. The fingerprint clearance usually requires 2-4 weeks for processing. If you have a current Arizona State issued level 1 fingerprint clearance card, it will be accepted as long as it is not expired. The student health center at NAU offers many of the vaccinations and physical examinations. Contact Campus Health Services at 928-523-2131 or log in online to the patient portal for an appointment. Please verify they will accept your insurance.

If the following items are not uploaded to Exxat by the required document deadline, your seat in the program may be forfeited.

Northern Arizona University is a Drug-free School

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is committed to providing a healthy educational environment consistent with university policies and free from unlawful acts. To achieve this goal and comply with federal law, NAU prohibits the unlawful sale, manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, and use of controlled substances on its property or as any part of its activities. NAU must certify compliance with The Drug-Free Workplace Act (41 U.S.C. § 8102, et seq.), The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (20 U.S.C. § 7101, et seq.), and the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Regulations (34 C.F.R. 86, et seq.). Read the full drug policy.

Nursing students must conduct and promote safe patient care in all aspects of their program, including but not limited to clinical settings. Nursing students who participate under the influence of alcohol or drugs that impair judgment pose a threat to the safety of patients and others. In order to provide a safe, substance-free environment for all, NAU requires substance screening on a pre-admission basis as well as “for cause” for students in nursing programs.

Because of the rural emphasis within our nursing program, you will be responsible for providing your own transportation to clinical settings.

Additionally, any expense such as lodging, meals, lab studies, immunizations, travel expenses, etc. incurred during clinical experiences by the student is the student’s responsibility.

These will be the supplies you will need while in nursing school. It is best to have the supplies purchased by the start of the term.

  • A quality stethoscope. These usually cost at least $50.
  • A Kelly clamp (hemostat)
  • A penlight
  • A pair of bandage scissors
  • A pen (black ink)
  • A blood pressure cuff
  • A watch with a second hand
  • NAU College of Nursing name tag
  • NAU College of Nursing uniform (2)
  • Shoes: white or black with some gray. No loud colors or designs allowed.

Reminders from the Dean

New laws have recently been passed by the Arizona Legislature, which may impact students’ ability to do clinical rotations at the local healthcare facilities as well as obtain licensure in the State of Arizona. Please read the attachment, “Legal Limitations for Nurse Licensure.”

Because of the rural emphasis within our nursing program, you will be responsible for providing your own transportation to clinical settings.

Additionally, any expense such as lodging, meals, lab studies, immunizations, travel expenses, etc. incurred during clinical experiences by the student is your responsibility.

The College of Nursing web page has a list of available scholarships under Resources.

Once again, congratulations and welcome to the College of Nursing at NAU!

Sincerely,

Janina C Johnson, DNP, RN, CNE
