Major DOE study launched to drastically reduce data center energy consumption; NAU physicist named collaborator

Posted by Heather Tate on February 1, 2019

Ryan Behunin working in his labAs data centers expand to handle the exponential growth of global data traffic, the amount of energy they consume is increasing at an alarming rate. Currently, data centers use approximately 10 percent of the world’s electricity—predicted to grow to 20 percent by 2025—and in the process are also becoming one of the world’s biggest sources of pollution.

NAU’s Neuroscience of Compassion undergraduate program boosts research careers

Posted by Heather Tate on November 16, 2017

This summer, associate professor Chad Woodruff and his colleagues concluded another successful Neuroscience of Compassion Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Sponsored by Northern Arizona University’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Department of Psychological Sciences, the program trains eight students each summer how to conduct research into the cortical, physiological and psychosocial underpinnings of compassionate behavior.

The elite REU… Read more

Seeing the forest for the trees: NAU scientists analyze snowmelt using latest remote sensing technologies

Posted by Heather Tate on September 27, 2017

Teki Sankey holding a drone.Snowmelt is a vital source of soil moisture in northern Arizona, but in overly dense forests where tree canopies merge, up to 60 percent of the snow never reaches the ground.

A new grant from The Nature Conservancy is funding a two-year interdisciplinary project in which a team of NAU scientists will study the effects of… Read more
