Random Number Generating Systems with Ternary States


Description

This invention uses random number generators (RNGs) designed with memories containing ternary states that are based on commercially available memory architectures. The ternary states, X’s, allow the selection of cells that are unstable to switch back and forth from one to zero. These ternary cells are foundational for the generation of random numbers. This method produces a high level of randomness that can further benefit from other methods of randomization.

Benefits and advantages

One important application of this method is related to resistive RAMs due to their greater immunity to side-channel attacks such as DPA and EMI. With ReRAM, RNG data rates can be extremely fast, reaching the 1 Gbit/s level.
