2019 Jazz Madrigal Festival
The annual Northern Arizona University Vocal Jazz Madrigal Festival, one of the largest festivals of its kind in the United States, features special guest clinicians and over 140 high school ensembles from Arizona and nearby states. The two-day festival includes a host concert in which choirs from NAU and professional groups of national and international stature appear.
This event will be held on the NAU campus in Flagstaff from Thursday, February 7th through Saturday, February 9th, 2019. Ensembles of all ability levels are invited to participate in this rated, but non-competitive festival.
We are pleased to announce the following Madrigal clinicians: Dr. Iris Levine (Cal Poly Pomona/Vox Femina), John Tebay (Fullerton College), and Dr. Sandra Snow (Michigan State University). Vocal Jazz clinicians will be members of the New York Voices (Peter Eldridge, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader, and Kim Nazarian). John Knutson (Cuesta College) will serve as a madrigal clinician on Friday and a vocal jazz clinician on Saturday.
COST – $200.00 for each jazz or madrigal ensemble. Initially, we will accept only TWO ensembles per director. Registration begins 7:00 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2018 and runs until 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2018. NOTE: registration accepted by EMAIL ONLY (no faxes.)
Information packets will be emailed out the third week of September.
Additional ensembles will be accepted only after all applicants have been given the opportunity to schedule an ensemble. Available slots will be assigned to additional ensembles after the October 23-25 registration period. Entry fee is due by 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 7, 2018. If the entry fee is not received by this date, reserved times will be given to the first school on the waiting list and your school will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list. Please note that this will be strictly enforced this year due to the high demand for festival slots.
We are very excited to announce that the New York Voices will be the guest ensemble for this year’s festival! Having recently celebrated their 30th Anniversary the New York Voices show no signs of slowing down. This critically acclaimed vocal group has refined their musical story to a high art. They are known for their close-knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend. Their chameleon-like musicianship allows them to move seamlessly from setting to setting, be it orchestral/big band to the intimate trio lineup.
CONTINUED FOR 2019: New York Voices and The Shrine of the Ages choir will present two host concerts on Thursday, February 7th and Friday, February 8th at 7:30 pm
In addition, the NAU Vocal Jazz Ensembles High Altitude and Northern Voices will also be presenting a free concert on Friday and Saturday from 12:10-1:10 p.m.
