Cisco AnyConnect VPN (Virtual Private Network)

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN is a Virtual Private Network service provided by NAU that allows clients to connect to NAU's network from a non-NAU Internet Service Provider (ISP). Once the client is connected through the Cisco AnyConnect VPN, they will appear as if they are connected directly to the NAU campus network. This allows the client to access resources and services that are restricted to campus-connected computers.

Windows

Installing

Step 1 

Go to the Cisco AnyConnect Download page from NAU's Software Downloads website. (you will be required to login with your NAU UserID and Password). Click on "Download Cisco AnyConnect VPN for Windows".

Step 2 

Once the download completes, locate the download within your browser or in your downloads area on your computer. It will be called "Cisco_AnyConnect_VPN.msi". Then, run it.

Step 3 

When the installer wizard opens, select "Next".

Select the radio button for "I accept the terms in the License Agreement".  Then, select "Next".

Select "Install".

If prompted for a User Access Control confirmation, select "Yes". Note: This prompt might differ slightly depending on which Windows operating system you are running.

Once the install completes select "Finish".

Connecting

Step 1 

Open the Start Menu from your desktop. (Usually found in the bottom-left hand corner.) 

The Start Menu icon will differ depending on which Windows operating system you are running.

From the Start Menu, search for "Cisco AnyConnect". This can be done by simply just typing "Cisco AnyConnect" once the Start Menu is open. (It is NOT required to click inside of the search bar first.) When the Cisco AnyConnect application appears, select the application to open it.

The Start Menu will differ depending on which Windows operating system you are running.

Step 3 

Once the application opens, insert "NAUVPN.nau.edu". Then, select "Connect".

In the drop down next to Group/Location, select "1 NAUVPN". In the "Username" field, insert your NAU UserID (Example: abc123). In the "Password" field, insert your NAU Password. Then, select "OK".

Once you are successfully connected, you will see the icon, located in the system tray, that indicates connection. This icon is represented by the Cisco AnyConnect symbol with a gold lock.

Enabling Local Lan

Step 1

Once the application opens, select the advanced settings gear wheel in the bottom left corner.

In the settings window, select the "Preferences" tab.

Under Preferences, select the checkbox for "Allow local (LAN) access when using VPN (if configured)"

Updating
This Cisco AnyConnect VPN client will update automatically when logging in and connecting to the client.
Uninstalling

Step 1

Step 3 

From the Control Panel window, change the "View by:" option to "Small icons".

Step 4 

Select "Programs and Features".

Step 5 

Within Programs and Features, find and select "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client". Then, select "Uninstall".

Step 6 

When the dialogue box pops up asking "Are you sure you want to uninstall Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client and all its modules?", select "Yes". The uninstaller will complete the rest of the uninstall on its own.

Step 7 

Once the client has finished uninstalling, it is recommended that you reboot your machine.

Start Before Logon (SBL)

The following steps provide instructions for turning on Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobile Client before logging into your machine.

Step 1

At the Windows logon screen, select the network icon in the bottom right corner.

Step 2 

Type "NAUVPN.nau.edu" into the bar and select "Connect".

Step 3

In the "Username" field, insert your NAU UserID (Example: abc123). In the "Password" field, insert your NAU Password. Then, select "OK".

Step 4

You are now connected to Cisco VPN. To view your connection, tap the Network icon on the bottom right. To disconnect from the VPN, tap the second network icon with the X.

Step 5

Now that you are connected, continue logging into Windows as you normally would.

Mac OS X

Installing

Step 1 

Go to the Cisco AnyConnect Download page from NAU's Software Downloads website. (you will be required to login with your NAU UserID and Password). Click on "Download Cisco AnyConnect VPN for Mac".

Step 2 

Once the download completes, locate the download within your browser or in your downloads area on your computer. It will be called "Cisco_AnyConnect_VPN.dmg". Then, run it.

Step 3 

From the window that opens, double-click the AnyConnect.pkg to begin the install.

From the installer, select "Continue".

From the Software Licence Agreement, select "Continue".

When prompted, select "Agree" to agree to the terms of the software licence agreement.

From the Installation Type, make sure the check-box next to "VPN" is checked. Then, select "Continue".

Then, select "Install".

If prompted, enter the administrative "Username" and "Password" for your machine into the respective fields. Then, select "Install Software".

When the installation completes, select "Close".

Connecting

Step 1 

Open the Spotlight Search from your desktop. To do this, click the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right hand corner of the menu bar.

Step 2 

From the Spotlight Search window, click inside the search bar where it says "Spotlight Search".

Depending on what OS X version you are running on your machine, the Spotlight Search window might appear slightly different.

Step 3 

Type "Cisco AnyConnect" into the search. Then, double-click the application to open it.

Step 4 

Once the application opens, insert "NAUVPN.nau.edu". Then, select "Connect".

In the drop down next to "Group/Location", select "1 NAUVPN". In the "Username" field, insert your NAU UserID (Example: abc123). In the "Password" field, insert your NAU Password. Then, select "OK".

Enabling Local Lan

Step 1

Once Cisco has opened, select the "Preferences" setting gear wheel in the bottom left corner.

In the Preferences window, select the checkbox for "Allow local (LAN) access when using VPN (if configured)"

Updating

This Cisco AnyConnect VPN client will update automatically when logging in and connecting to the client.

 

Uninstalling

Step 1

Type "Applications" into the search. Then, double-click the application folder to open it.

Within the Finder window for the Applications, locate and double-click the "Cisco" folder to open it.

Step 5 

Then within the Cisco folder, double-click on the "Uninstall AnyConnect" application.

Step 6 

When the dialog box pop ups stating and asking "The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client will be completely removed from your system. Are you sure you wish to uninstall the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client?", select "Uninstall".

Step 7 

If prompted, enter the administrative "Username" and "Password" for your machine into the respective fields. Then, select "OK". The uninstaller with complete the rest of the uninstall on its own.

Select "Quit" when it states "AnyConnect has been uninstalled".

Step 9 

Once the client has finished uninstalling, it is recommended that you reboot your machine.

Android

Installing

Cisco AnyConnect requires Android 4.0 or later. 

You can visit the Google Play Store web page for Cisco AnyConnect for Android at any time and install the app directly. All you need to do is make sure you are signed-in with the same Google account that is set up and synced with your Android mobile device.

Step 1 

Locate and tap to open the Google "Play Store" within your Android mobile device applications.

Once in the Google Play Store, tap in the search area.

In the search bar, type in "Cisco AnyConnect". Then, tap on the "AnyConnect" search result.

Tap "INSTALL".

Connecting

Step 1 

Locate and tap to open the Cisco "AnyConnect" application within your Android mobile device applications.

Within Advanced Preferences, tap "Add New VPN Connection...".

Make sure the check mark is next to "NAU VPN" that you just setup. Then, tap the back arrow "<" next to "Advanced Preferences".

Turn the "Off" button to On by tapping and sliding it to the right.

In the drop down for Group/Location, select "1 NAUVPN". In the "Username" field, insert your NAU UserID (Example: abc123). In the "Password" field, insert your NAU Password. Then, tap "Connect".

Once you are connected, you will see the icon, located in the menu bar, that indicates connection. This icon is represented by the key. Also, it will show as "Connected" below AnyConnect VPN within the AnyConnect application.

Updating
The Cisco AnyConnect VPN application will update automatically through the Android Google Play Store.

iOS

Installing

Cisco AnyConnect requires iOS 6.0 or later. 

You can visit the iTunes App Store web page for Cisco AnyConnect for iOS at any time and install the app from there. This will require you to use iTunes and your Apple account that is set up and synced with your iPhone or iPad.

Step 1 

Locate and tap to open the "App Store" within your iOS mobile device applications.

Within the App Store, tap inside of the search area where it says "Search".

Inside the search, type "Cisco AnyConnect". Tap the "Cisco AnyConnect" application search result that pops up in the Suggestions.

Within the "Description" field insert "NAU VPN". Within the "Server Address" field insert "NAUVPN.nau.edu". Then, tap "Save".

Updating
The Cisco AnyConnect VPN application will update automatically through the Apple App Store.
Uninstalling

Step 1 

Locate and tap to open "AnyConnect" within your iOS mobile device applications.

From within the AnyConnect application, tap "Diagnostics"

Now, tap "Profile".

When prompted "Are you sure you want to delete the profile?", tap "OK".

Return to the device's Home screen.

Step 7 

Locate "AnyConnect" within your iOS mobile device applications. Tap and hold the AnyConnect application icon until a delete (X) icon appears above it.

Tap the delete (X) icon above the AnyConnect application icon.

Step 9 

When prompted "Delete "AnyConnect"?", tap "Delete".

Once the client has finished uninstalling, it is recommended that you reboot your machine.

Chromebook

Installing

Step 1

Visit the Chrome Web Store page for the Cisco AnyConnect VPN.

Step 2

Select "+ ADD TO CHROME".

From within the AnyConnect application, select "Add New Connection".

In the "Name" field, insert "NAU VPN".  In the "Server Address" field, insert "NAUVPN.nau.edu". Then, select "Save Changes".

Select your network icon (usually in the bottom-right hand corner).

Select "VPN disconnected".

Select "NAU VPN (user)"

Note: Once you have set the VPN up, and successfully connected for the first time, you may choose the "NAUVPN" option.

In the drop down next to Group/Location, select "1 NAUVPN". In the "Username" field, insert your NAU UserID (Example: abc123). In the "Password" field, insert your NAU Password. Then, select "Submit".

Once you are connected, you will see the icon that indicates connection. This icon is represented by the 4 squares placed over your network icon. Also, it will show as "Connected"within the AnyConnect application.

Linux
