A global mission
At Northern Arizona University’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management our mission is to prepare socially responsible, culturally-aware students for success in an ever-changing, global hospitality industry through rigorous academic programs informed by faculty research and meaningful industry engagement.
Partnering with international universities allows HRM the privilege to welcome visiting international students into our program. This is an enriching experience for the students, as well as the staff and faculty. We are honored to continue our partnerships with Shanghai Business School, Yangzhou University, Huaqiao University and Heihe University. As well as welcome students from Shanghai Polytechnic University and Sanda University to HRM very soon.
The student experience
HRM connected with a number of international students currently attending our program and asked them to share their experiences.
Jingyi Fan, Shanghai Business School
I would like to sincerely thank all of the HRM professors and staff for being by my side, and all international students as well during our stay in HRM. – Jingyi
“Living here truly gave me much more confidence and all of the professors and students here are helpful and nice, always willing to care and help, making our school life as international students much easier and more comfortable.
What has helped me a lot in my future, study life and career life is Professor Reich and his marketing class. I took his Hospitality Marketing class last semester and I had great interest in his case studies at class as well as the lectures given by different company representatives. I developed my interest in marketing and his class inspired me with marketing knowledge and the current trends in various terms. After our final project, he gave me astounding feedback on my marketing plan, which in turn, inspired me to thinking deeply about if I should choose marketing as my future career direction. Right now, I have decided that I will apply for marketing as my post graduate major. The other professor that I greatly appreciate is Professor Chen, I haven’t taken her class but she is such a helpful person that often connects with us during extra-curricular time.”
Ruijie Wang, a 121 program student from Huaqiao University
Since I came here, I became more independent and more outgoing. Through the practice and the opportunities provided by our professors, I became more excellent. – Ruijie
“I found that studying abroad is definitely a good opportunity for students to open up their horizons and self-breakthrough.
NAU means opportunities for me. All the professors here are so kind to help us in the study and build a relationship with the hotels or restaurants. They provide us lots of internship opportunities and meet or chat with successful hospitality professionals. Take myself as an example, besides the HRM degree, I also study the Hospitality Accounting Certificate. Professor Hales and Rohs held a business lunch with Mark Koehler, the CFO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and introduced us to him.
I also participated in the Discovering Gastronomy in France initiated by Chef Mark and Professor Cauvin, and have unforgettable memories in France. We visited a winery, grape plantation, bread farm and so on. This experience helped me learn more about the Food & Beverage industry and the operation of restaurants and hotels.”
Fanwei Geng, a 121 program student from Yangzhou University
This semester, I took part in the casino night activity as a volunteer. I got to experience the atmosphere of casinos and the enthusiasm of Americans. In a word, I am very satisfied with my decision to study in NAU. – Fanwei
“My major is Hotel and Restaurant Management. My major is the main reason why I came to study at Northern Arizona University. NAU’s hotel management major ranks in the top of the United States and has a dedicated hotel management teaching building with complete facilities. A career fair is also held every semester. Especially in autumn, it is specially held for hotel management. This provides us with a lot of internship opportunities.
My experience in NAU tells me that better learning resources, more practice opportunities and a broader vision are available. Life at NAU is great. Most American college courses are taught in small classes, with about 30 students in one class. The professor can take every student into consideration, and the teaching quality and efficiency are also very high.”
Yifan Wu, a 121 program student from Yangzhou University
At first I have no ideas about NAU, I just search some information from the internet. So, I only know that the Hotel and Restaurant Management major is doing very well. At that time, I was still full of unknowns and doubts about everything, but now I am very grateful that I have chosen this program, because I spent a pretty great time here. – Yifan
“As a Hotel and Restaurant Management student, I feel lucky both in life and in learning. In terms of life, the people responsible for the 1+2+1 program in the school are very nice and able to solve any problems that you ask them, and also they are concerned about our daily life, whether we can adapt to the American education system, if there are any problems in diet and study, etc. In terms of learning, I found that there are a lot of resources for me, so that I can learn very independently, and our academic advisers are always around to help us solve any problems with course planning. Every professor I meet here has their own characteristics, and is very patient with international students, and is very happy to accept our different ideas.”
Chen Wang, a 121 program student from Yangzhou University
When I study in an American school, I often think, what can I gain from this? And the answer is knowledge, more practical skills, more experience, bigger stage, and higher vision. – Chen
“Studying at NAU is fun! American universities attach great importance to teamwork among students. In many courses, teachers ask several students to work together to complete a project and make a summary report. Many professors are friendly to international students, they are willing to help us with our study. This semester, I had the honor to participate in the volunteer activity of casino night and felt the fun of the American family. HRM also provides students with many internship opportunities and holds career fairs every year.”
Special thanks to Jingyi, Ruijie, Fanwei, Yifan and Chen for sharing their experiences.
