The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) program at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a federal TRiO Program college preparation program that serves high school students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or will be first-generation college graduates. The mission of Upward Bound Math & Science is to create and enhance the skills and motivations necessary to graduate high school, as well as the completion of a baccalaureate degree. The UBMS program is housed on the NAU Flagstaff mountain campus serving five target high schools in Northern Arizona. The program works with 9th-12th grade students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
Eligibility, a student must meet the following criteria: Accordion Closed
- Income eligible and/or potential first-generation college student (neither parent have a four-year bachelor’s degree)
- Have a 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
- Interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers
- Current high school freshman or sophomore attending one of our “target” schools:
- Coconino High School
- Holbrook High School
- Many Farms High School
- Monument Valley High School
- Tuba City High School

- Academic year program offers academic instruction, tutoring, academic advisement, preparation in college entrance exams, counseling, and social and personal development
- Summer residential program offers a college experience for high school students
- Assistance with college selection, admissions, housing, entrance exams, and financial aid. Post-secondary support is also provided
- Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school
- Cultural, social, and recreational activities designed to foster growth and broaden student awareness, appreciation, and respect for each other
- Student advocacy at various post-secondary institutions, scholarship programs, and internships
