Easy Ways to Boost Your Happiness in College
Happiness is essential. Especially in a college environment, finding what makes you happy keeps you looking forward to the new adventures you will have in school. Being a way from home is sometimes very hard, but these are some techniques and routines that many college students use daily to keep themselves positive and happy as they transition into the world of independence.
Meditation
Taking the time to focus on yourself is important in a setting where you are constantly working. Whether in your room or on-campus elsewhere, you can meditate and take the time needed to regroup, re-center, and refocus on your tasks. If you are not at home, closing your eyes and taking a few minutes to focus on your breath with a 4-7-8 breathing technique will allow your mind to clear. These are many other meditative exercises that can be done while at home, too. With all the various types of exercises, there is bound to be one that fits you!
Keep a Journal of Positive Thoughts
Having a journal to write down your highlights of the day makes you focus on the positive feelings, events, and more. Great questions to ask yourself are “What was your favorite thing you did? When did you feel the happiest today? What did you appreciate the most?” Writing these down will keep you feeling productive, positive, and optimistic of your next day. Create a Vision Board
A vision board is the perfect way to take up some time and to start planning your future. Have a dream job? Perhaps the perfect location you want to go to grad school? Maybe a few idols? Take the time and arts-and-craft your way into planning your perfect future life. The first step to reaching your goal is to ENVISION it! Afterwards, they are perfect to hang up in your room to have a constant reminder of your long-term goals and what makes you truly happy.
Sleep and Rest
Everyone needs extra sleep. Working, going to school, keeping up on homework, and trying to maintain a social life can sometimes be exhausting. But staying true to a sleep schedule and getting at least the minimum required hours of sleep will keep you feeling rejuvenated and your mind refreshed. The best time to get into a productive bedtime routine is now!
Baking and Cooking
With all the responsibilities of a First-Generation college student, sometimes it may feel there is no time to cook or bake and take the time to do something for yourself. However, there are some easy recipes that do not require as much work, but still produce quality meals and quick snacks that will make you feel productive and much happier. Listening to Podcasts
If you have podcasts available to you or are interested in listening to podcasts, find a podcast that fits what you are interested in! There are podcasts ranging from happiness, healthy life choices, true crime, and even podcasts for various hobbies. Sometimes it may take time to find a podcast that is right for you, but once found, walking to classes, riding a bike, or even having a podcast to listen to while doing tasks around campus will keep your mind focused on things you love.
