Who we are
The NAU Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness is located within the NAU Police Department and is overseen by the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration. The NAU Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness has one full-time employee, the Director, and at least one intern.
Marc W. Burdiss CEM, M.Ed serves as the Director of The Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness for Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. In this role he directs the planning, organizing, and execution of campus emergency management activities for Northern Arizona University and its various colleges and departments. His job involves routinely meeting with local, state, and federal emergency management agencies and with neighboring emergency management directors to plan for, or respond to emergencies, and is also responsible for maintaining and updating university emergency operations and recovery plans. Mr. Burdiss has earned the International Association of Emergency Managers designation as a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), and is a FEMA recognized Master Exercise Practitioner (MEP), with experience designing and facilitating exercises ranging from county, state, and federal level exercises, to military and Major League Baseball exercises.
Prior to his current job, Mr. Burdiss worked as the Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for Shelby County, Ohio for five and one-half years. Before that, he was one of eight Field Liaisons for the Ohio Emergency Management Agency in Columbus where he worked disasters statewide, administered Emergency Management Performance Grants for eleven counties, and helped new emergency managers learn what was required in their positions. Mr. Burdiss has a Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management and Planning.
