Career and Technical Education, Undergraduate Certificate

This certificate plan is designed to meet your needs if you are currently at least provisionally certified for Career and Technical Education; and are completing the required professional knowledge courses to convert your provisional certificate to a standard certificate.

To be admitted to this program you need to have an Arizona Provisional Career and Technical Education teaching certificate (or equivalent from another state).

Requirements Accordion Open

  • To receive an undergraduate certificate (at least 15 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.

    Please be aware that federal financial aid is not available for some certificates, if the certificate is pursued and completed as a stand-alone certificate (i.e., not completed concurrently with a degree program). See the "Details" tab for additional information.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Certificate in Career and Technical Education is to provide professional knowledge courses for those with occupation specific knowledge and skills. The certificate program combines fundamental career and technical education theory with professional knowledge for developing and delivering occupational training in a variety of educational settings. It is ideal for those who seek professional advancement in the field of career and technical education or who require professional knowledge courses for certification renewal. Those who complete this certificate will have the knowledge and ability to plan, develop, deliver, and assess instruction in their occupational area.   

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate familiarity and understanding of foundations of Career and Technical Education.
    • Demonstrate familiarity and understanding of the Career and Technical Education terminology and structure through appropriate use in written documents and oral presentations.
    • Differentiate the functional, historical and philosophical structure and contexts of Career and Technical Education at the national and international levels.
    • Examine the philosophical social, economic, and ethical considerations and consequences of Career and Technical Education’s role in American society; and identify how these consequences will impact their work in the profession.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and develop instruction.
    • Demonstrate ability to pre-assess prior knowledge to plan for effective instruction.
    • Select materials, methods and resources to meet instructional goals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to deliver and assess instruction.
    • Demonstrate ability to employ a variety of teaching methods to effectively engage  learners.
    • Evaluate learning, provide appropriate feedback to learners, and objectively judge effectiveness of content delivery methods.
  • Demonstrate professional application of essential skills.
    • Demonstrate effective communication skills (written and oral) in  the planning, development, delivery and assessment of instruction.
    • Evaluate and critique employability skills for application and integration into Career and Technical Education curriculum and programs.
    • Model appropriate professional occupational conduct and ethics  though application in the planning, development, delivery and assessment of instruction.
  • Demonstrate the ability to positively affect learning of all students and address the needs of diverse students.

Additional Admission Requirements
  • Admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.
    • To be admitted to this program you need to have an Arizona Provisional Career and Technical Education teaching certificate (or equivalent from another state) or have completed a certificate program or AAS degree in an approved career and technical education occupation area from an accredited institution.
Certificate Requirements
  • Take the following 15 units with a Grade of "C" or better in each course and a minimum GPA of 2.5:
    • Core: CTE 300, CTE 433, CTE 465 (9 units)
    • CTE professional courses chosen with your advisor (6 units)
    All courses in this certificate program are eligible for transfer to one of the BSEd Career and Technical Education degree programs.
  • This certificate may be pursued and completed concurrently with a degree program or as a stand-alone certificate. Federal financial aid cannot be used if the certificate is completed as a stand-alone certificate.
