Student activities and accomplishments

Johan Bodaski, Anderson Dun, Kevin Snyder, and Helena Squier presented papers at the Western Social Science Association meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah in April, 2011. Bodaski, Dun, and Squier also facilitated a discussion on “Case Studies in Political Communication,” where more than 30 people from across disciplines participated.

Antonio De La Garza and T. Mark Montoya (NAU Ethnic Studies faculty member) presented their paper “But It’s a Dry Fascism: Arizona’s HR 2281 and the Banning of Ethnic Studies” at the 39th annual conference of the National Ethnic Studies Association in Claremont, California in April 2011.

Patricia Keesee (M.A., 2007) and her thesis adviser Dr. Laura Umphrey had their paper “Attachment Style, Responses to Dissatisfaction, and Relationship Disengagement Strategies in Romantic Relationships” accepted for presentation by the Interpersonal Communication interest group for the Western States Communication Association conference in Tempe, AZ in February 2009.

Brian Rogers presented his paper “Kick Starting the Conversation: How YouTube Could Alter Marginalized Representation” at the Western Social Science Association annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2009.

Brian Rogers presented his paper “A Review of the Literature Regarding Interaction Between Instructional Technology and Instructor Immediacy” at the Western Social Science Association annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2009.

Brian Rogers (MA, 2010) presented his paper “The Sexual as Political: Camp Sensibilities in Political and Sexual Messages in The Raspberry Reich” at the Western States Communication Association annual meeting in Monterey, California in February 2011. Brian’s paper was based on this MA thesis.

Kevin Snyder presented his paper “The Religious Exigency of Barack Obama and John McCain” at the Western Social Science Association annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2009.

Riva Starks presented her paper “Barack Obama’s Presidential Campaign: A Redressing of American Politics on the Internet” at the Western Social Science Association annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2009.

Awards

John Hessinger was given an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for the 2010-2011 academic year by the NAU Office of Graduate and Professional Studies and the NAU Faculty Development Program.

Antonio De La Garza received an NAU Diversity and Equity Award by the NAU Commission on Ethnic Diversity in May 2011.

The NAU Office of Graduate and Professional Studies recognized Hilary Nemchik (M.A., 2008) as a Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year for 2007-2008.
