Indigenous Youth Media Workshop
Indigenous Youth Media Workshop
Live and learn in Flagstaff, Arizona
For ten years, the Andy Harvey Indigenous Youth Media Workshop has been bringing Native American and other high school students from across Arizona & the Southwest to the Northern Arizona University Flagstaff campus for a week each summer to learn the “ins and outs” of broadcast media and journalism.
This year’s workshop will be held June 25 to July 1, 2023.
Workshop participants will live in residence halls on the NAU campus in Flagstaff and work in the School of Communication’s Media Innovation Center newsroom and HD television studio.
Working alongside NAU students, Native American mentors, journalism faculty and media professionals, the students will:
- Experience college life: living in residence halls and meals in the student union.
- Use professional equipment to learn multimedia broadcast journalism skills (focuses on video, TV, audio, and immersive journalism).
- Produce multimedia news stories.
- Produce a live news broadcast in our three-camera high-definition studio.
- Discover media careers by participating in a media job fair.
- This workshop encourages Native American and other high school students to work together to tell the stories that are important to them and their communities.
The primary goals of the workshop are to enable Indigenous students to use the tools and the skills they learn at the workshop to tell their own stories and promote aspirations to attend college.
This workshop encourages Indigenous youth to be agents of positive change in their communities.
The workshop is open to students currently in grades 8-12 with preference given to Native American high school juniors and seniors.
Cost: $50 tuition. Students are provided room & all meals during the week. Full scholarships are available.
Travel to/from Flagstaff is not provided.
Applications are now closed.
