Be Ready for Commencement

We’re proud of your accomplishments as a Lumberjack and want to help you prepare for this exciting day! Seating is open for guests, but limit your guests to 10. Tickets are not required.

A Guide to Commencement

Prepare for commencement by following these steps:


Eligibility for Commencement To activate the Eligibility for Commencement tab, press your spacebar.

Northern Arizona University holds commencement exercises in December and May of each year, and degrees are awarded at the end of Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer terms.

  • Baccalaureate students graduating in the spring or summer term are included in the spring ceremony, and their names are published in the May commencement program.
  • Baccalaureate students graduating in the fall or winter term are included in the fall ceremony, and their names are published in the December commencement program.
  • Graduate students graduating in the summer, fall or winter term are included in the fall ceremony, and their names are published in the December commencement program.
  • Graduate students graduating in the spring term are included in the spring ceremony, and their names are published in the May commencement program.

Apply For Graduation To activate the Apply For Graduation tab, press your spacebar.

Candidates with an approved graduation application on file with the Registrar are invited to participate in the Commencement exercises.

Purchase Your Cap and Gown To activate the Purchase Your Cap and Gown tab, press your spacebar.

The NAU Bookstore and Herff Jones both offer convenient options to purchase all of your commencement items:

  • Cap/tam, gown, tassel, honor cords, stoles of gratitude
  • Announcements and regalia
  • Order before Sunday, November 19, 2017 to avoid rush fees. Online sales close Thursday, November 23, 2017 at 9 p.m.
  • Regalia can also be purchased at the NAU Bookstore prior to graduation and on the day of the event

Undergraduates are eligible for Latin Honors if they have successfully completed 30 units at NAU and have an exemplary grade point average. Master students with a GPA of 3.9 may also purchase honor cords. To order, call the NAU Bookstore at 1-800-426-7674.

NAU Bookstore Herff Jones

When and Where to Assemble To activate the When and Where to Assemble tab, press your spacebar.

  • Please arrive one hour prior to your ceremony start time. Proceed to the Skydome floor for student staging, accessed by the stairs at the north end of the Skdyome.
  • Only graduating students and faculty in cap and gown will be permitted to participate in commencement.
  • Please do not bring anything with you to the student gathering area on the floor of the Skydome – leave coats, purses, etc. with family or friends.
    • You will NOT be allowed to carry backpacks or bags/purses to the floor with you.
    • Alcohol, air horns, balloons/beach balls are not permitted in the guest or student seating areas.

What to Wear To activate the What to Wear tab, press your spacebar.

  • Please wear comfortable shoes! You will be navigating several steps.
  • Bachelor’s degree candidates: Navy cap and gown.
  • Master’s degree candidates: Navy cap and gown, black hood with navy and gold satin on the inside, and the degree color for the velvet.
  • Doctoral degree candidates: Navy tam and gown, carrying your black hood with navy and gold satin on the inside, and the degree color for the velvet. Students will be hooded before crossing the stage.

During and After the Ceremony To activate the During and After the Ceremony tab, press your spacebar.

  • Set all cell phones to “vibrate” or “off.”
  • Once you reach your seat, remain standing until distinguished guests are in place on the platform.
  • When your degree program is called to the stage, take any personal items with you, as you may not return to your same seat.
  • The recessional at the close of the ceremony will be led by the platform party, faculty then students.
  • Following commencement, you will be able to meet your guests outside of the Skydome. Please keep in mind that there is no access to the stage area following the ceremonies.

Individuals with Disabilities To activate the Individuals with Disabilities tab, press your spacebar.

If a student requires a reasonable accommodation due to a disability to participate in commencement exercises, please contact the Equity and Access Office at 928-523-3312 or equityandaccess@nau.edu. Requests for accommodation should be made as early as possible, preferably at least one week prior to commencement, to allow time to arrange the accommodation.

Commencement T-Shirts To activate the Commencement T-Shirts tab, press your spacebar.

Online orders will be available for pick up on the day of commencement. To receive your order, prior to the ceremony, please stop by our booth which is conveniently located in the east concourse of the Skydome.
