What’s your why?
Why did you pursue a path in public health/what influenced you or attracted you to this area of study:
I became interested in nutrition growing up as a competitive gymnast. Learning how different foods could fuel my body as an athlete sparked my interest in the way foods affect health and performance. This passion only grew after I quit gymnastics and learned that food & nutrition has such a significant impact on long-term health and everyday life. Growing up, my mom had always been very passionate about taking care of our bodies with nutritious foods. We spent many days cooking in the kitchen together, trying new recipes and perfecting old ones. My mom taught me how to use these days to prepare for a busy week in order to be successful in my productive schedule, but also my body’s health & well-being. While taking my first class at NAU, I became so enamored with the world of functional foods and wellness. I learned about a multitude of paths that a nutrition student can take, and how imperative nutrition is in all stages of life. Ever since, my ambition to learn has only grown and I am excited to see what future educational and professional opportunities are in store for me!
What career or path do you want to pursue after graduation?
After graduating this May, I plan to earn my Master’s degree in Nutrition and take the RDN exam in order to fulfill my long-term goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian. I am interested in many fields of nutrition and I am excited to narrow those down as I complete my Dietetic Internship rotations!

What should people who are considering a degree in public health know or consider/what advice do you have for others considering a degree in public health?
I think it is important to pay attention to which subjects grasp your interest. When you are passionate about what you are learning, it doesn’t feel like work at all. Make connections with your professors and take advantage of the opportunities for involvement in your program and community. I am currently in my NTS408 internship and working with the Sedona Fire Department. This experience has strengthened my skills in community nutrition and research. As I have built a relationship with the Sedona Fire crew, I am noticing the importance of rapport within a nutrition setting, and the value of trust & partnership in a successful nutrition intervention. Because of the NAU Nutrition & Foods program, I have become well-equipped for my future in dietetics and ready for the opportunities ahead!
