What’s your why?

I chose a career as a physician assistant because I have always been driven by a passion for improving the health and well-being of others, particularly those who face barriers to care. Throughout my jobs in healthcare, I witnessed firsthand how social determinants of health, such as access to healthcare, socioeconomic status, and education, can deeply impact individuals’ ability to lead healthy lives. These factors ignited my desire to pursue a career where I could make a tangible difference. Today, I work in a rural and underserved community, where many individuals face challenges such as limited access to healthcare facilities, transportation issues, and financial constraints. Every day, I see how social determinants influence health outcomes, from chronic diseases to mental health struggles. The work I do as a physician assistant is rewarding because I have the privilege of offering compassionate care to those who might otherwise go without. By taking the time to understand the broader context of my patients’ lives, I can better address their unique needs and help them navigate the complex healthcare system. Knowing that my role plays a part in improving the lives of those in these communities is both humbling and inspiring, and it reinforces my commitment to making healthcare more accessible and equitable for all.

What advice do you have for others considering a career as a physician assistant?

Definitely shadow physician assistants prior to applying for PA school. This is the best way to truly understand your role within the healthcare team as a future PA. Ask questions and try to be involved as much as you can. Keep an open mind about where your career might lead you and take every learning opportunity when you can.
