NAU researchers start study on encampment resolution strategies in Arizona | AZ Daily Sun

Northern Arizona University has received funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for a study on encampment resolution strategies in Pima, Yuma, and Maricopa counties. The study, a partnership between Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and NAU, aims to examine different approaches to helping unsheltered individuals transition into shelters. The research will focus on people living in encampments in Yuma, Pima, and Maricopa counties, aiming to develop program and policy recommendations to move people toward housing and support those resistant to services. The study will continue through 2026 with three phases, each lasting about a year. The researchers will collect media coverage, interview people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, and work with nonprofit organizations to analyze the impacts of their previous strategies in addressing homelessness. The study will also include a health equity focus, considering the negative effects of homelessness on physical and mental health, as well as access to health services.
