Flagstaff United School District (FUSD) Day

Recently, 80 seventh graders from Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) visited NAU’s Flagstaff Mountain Campus to learn about life as a Lumberjack. While on campus, they visited the College of Health and Human Services to learn more about careers in healthcare. The Nutrition, Dental Hygiene, and Communication Sciences and Disorders programs all welcomed the students with hands-on activities to give them a chance to experience what a future healthcare career could look like.

Their activity-filled day included scaling “plaque” off model teeth called typodonts with current undergraduate students from Dental Hygiene, viewing an ultrasound of students’ vocal cords with graduate students studying to become speech-language pathologists, and conducting a blind taste test with nutrition experts.

Heather Thomas, chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene, helped ensure the FUSD students not only learned but also had fun. “It is so important that we make an effort to inspire the future generation, especially with the dire need for healthcare providers in Arizona,” says Thomas. “These students are the future of healthcare.”
