Outstanding Graduate from the Department of Philosophy: Jack Ryan

Jack Ryan is originally from Reston, Virginia. He has always had a passion for questioning the world around him, and he’s found philosophy to be a great tool for dissecting the parts of us we may not always acknowledge. “To be able to look at the world through multiple lenses, while keeping critical scrutiny imperative, is to take the world for what it is beyond ourselves and our beliefs,” he says. “Being able to converse about complex and delicate topics creates an atmosphere of intellectual openness that also allows for deep consideration of others. Not only has this allowed me to improve personally, but also to foster new and old perspectives that bind new connections and experiences.”

Jack wants to express his gratitude to his professors and mentors, Dr. Julie Piering and Dr. George Rudebusch. “Both Dr. Piering and Dr. Rudebusch have been an incredible influence on my academic journey; I am forever thankful for their support and encouragement.” He says that their deep care for their students is truly apparent in every situation. “They were always motivating me to further question my work and were constantly improving my skills as a student and writer. Their combined support has truly propelled me forward in every way.” Jack would like to say that he truly owes his academic dedication and prowess to Dr. Piering and Dr. Rudebusch.

As for his future plans, Jack is looking to pursue further academic opportunities through a graduate degree in philosophy. He looks to continually contribute to the philosophical community through research and teaching.
