Distinguished Senior from the College of Arts and Letters & Outstanding Graduate from the Department of Global Languages: Katelyn Fix

Katelyn is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs, along with a Minor in Community Engagement. Katelyn is from Flagstaff, Arizona, and has cherished this opportunity to continue building her connections with the community throughout college.

Katelyn’s experiences in CAL and GLC have been extremely rewarding to her. She loves learning and connecting with others through our shared humanity. By learning Spanish at NAU and studying abroad in Ecuador, she feels that she has expanded her own world immensely and developed the ability to communicate across cultures, borders, and language barriers.

Katelyn is grateful for every professor she had the opportunity to work with in GLC, as each and every one of them made a lasting impact on her academic and personal journey. Her Spanish professors at NAU helped her gain the confidence she needed to really develop her fluency and take on an immersive study abroad experience, which was a long-time dream of hers.

After graduation, Katelyn hopes to begin a career in community-based education and advocacy, and she has a particular interest in working to support and empower migrant, multilingual, and English-learning communities. In the longer term, Katelyn hopes to pursue a Master’s in Social Work with an emphasis on community action and social change, where she believes her Spanish language skills, compassion, and creative problem-solving will be tremendously influential for the communities with which she hopes to work.
