Over 200 NAU College of Education students accompanied by friends and family celebrated personal and academic achievement at the 2018 COE Scholarships Banquet on October 5th. “We are here today because we have faith in you. We believe in you. We care about you,” stated Dean Ramona Mellott in her opening address.
Nearly $300,000 was awarded to the record-breaking 2018-2019 scholarship recipients. The funds were contributed entirely by the generosity of several dozen donors, philanthropists, and friends of NAU, many of whom were proudly in attendance shaking the hands of their scholarship recipients and engaging with students and families during the concluding reception.
Recipients were selected via a blind faculty review of general scholarship applicants from January 2017. After extensive review of every application, awardees were selected by committee consideration that May. Though they were just honored in October, they will already be applying for 2019-2020 awards in January 2019.
A range of awardees were evident during the event; students were represented from undergraduate Sophomores to Doctoral students, from traditional undergraduates to single parents, veterans, and non-traditional online students looking to pivot in their professional careers. The diverse representation was a testament to the future of education, a future that appears increasingly bright.
“Congratulations on coming this far,” Dean Mellott concluded. “Keep going until you reach your dreams.”
