2018 Gold Axe and Distinguished Senior student recipients Accordion Closed
Our Gold Axe and Distinguished Senior student recipients were recognized. For our new faculty and staff, a small gold axe pin is given out by our student government (a tradition since 1933) to seniors who have outstanding achievements and record of distinguished service. This year, our Gold Axe recipients and their educators of influence were Christina Vega (Claire Schonaerts), Theresa Wedlich (Barb Veltri), Alexa Geiger (Nikki Huffman- Diving Coach) and Amanda Grimshaw (Karen van der Veer-Faculty in Sus Comm and First Year Seminar). Our distinguished senior award went Shaelyn Jiron. Shaelyn is in Germany student teaching in the DoDDS program, and her award was accepted by her cousin. Please see attached pictures. Gerald Wood, Ph.D. Accordion Closed
Dr. Gerald Wood was selected as the College of Education Teacher of the Year for the academic year 2016-2017. Dr. Wood has taught in NAU’s College of Education since 2006. Across the years, Dr. Wood has been known for his attention to student success, both in and out of the classroom. In his classes, Gerald encourages students to take ownership of their learning and to think critically about their roles as professionals. He encourages students to go beyond completing assignments and find ways to use the knowledge they gained in schools as well as the broader community. Over the last two years, Gerald has involved students in undergraduate research, and has taken undergraduate and graduate students to national conferences. He has been recognized as an Educator of Influence for Gold Axe recipients. He does all this with enthusiasm and positive energy that brings distinction to our college.

Jon Reyhner, Ed.D. edited the 2013 book “Honoring Our Children” (along with NAU co-editors: Dr. Joseph Martin, Dr. Louise Lockard, and Dr. Willard Gilbert).

Frances Riemer, Ph.D. recently published the article “Wrapped in the Flag: Liberal Discourse, Mexican American Studies, and Guns on Campus”.
Chih-Hsiung Tu, Ph.D. Accordion Closed
Chih-Hsiung Tu, Ph.D. published the latest version of the FREE e-book, “Online Learning: The PLE & the ONLE” created by students in the MEd in Educational Technology, ETC 655. Other titles and books previously published are available to view, and a version of “PLE & the ONLE” is available for download in iTunes.
Guy Senese, Ph.D. Accordion Closed
Guy Senese, Ph.D. received a Fullbright fellowship to draw comparisons between the political and theoretical foundations of education in Turkey and the United States. His work will be based at Ankara University’s School of Education Sciences. More information is available in this NAU News story.
