‘Stronger Together Worldwide’ Virtual Exchange Program
NAU intends to offer in-person classes for the Spring 2021 semester and we would be thrilled to welcome you to campus in January! However, we understand that international travel may not be easy or available for every student. As we try to facilitate access to learning opportunities around the world, we are pleased to announce two different exchange opportunities:
- The ‘Stronger Together Worldwide’ virtual exchange program
- A traditional in-person exchange program at our Flagstaff mountain campus.
Our virtual exchange program option includes:
- One to two courses (3 credits each) designed to connect virtual exchange students with local NAU students to enhance students’ skills in global positive change through a competencies-based approach, highlighting the ‘Stronger Together Worldwide’ program concept.
- Personalized advising to assist students in selecting the best NAU online courses to stay on-track academically for their graduation with their academic progression
- A buddy program that matches virtual exchange students with a local NAU student.
- Biweekly support circles, with NAU ambassadors.
- Virtual wellness activities and field trips.
- Free access to NAU’s Global Engagement and Language Learning Center.
- Access to NAU’s English language Bridge Program that combines intensive English study with entry-level academic courses. Additional costs apply.
Learn more about the virtual exchange program option with our Frequently Asked Questions below!
Do I need a student visa in order to take online classes at NAU? Accordion Closed
No. You can enroll in online classes at NAU without having a U.S. student visa.
Does enrolling in online classes at NAU guarantee that I will receive a student visa in the future? Accordion Closed
No. The student visa interview process is overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through U.S. embassies and consulates in your home country. Having previously demonstrated academic achievement at a U.S. institution could benefit your application, but it does not guarantee that you will receive a student visa for travel to the United States.
What if I enroll in the virtual exchange program and then am able to get a student visa prior to the start of classes in January? Accordion Closed
If you are able to obtain a student visa from the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country and travel to Flagstaff prior to the start of classes on January 11, we will work with you to make any necessary adjustments to your class schedule to reflect in-person enrollment.
If I receive a student visa in the middle of the semester, can I then travel to NAU for in-person classes? Accordion Closed

The first day of classes for the Spring 2021 semester (both in-person and online) will be Monday, January 11. All classes will conclude by May 7, 2021.

Exchange students should work with the NAU Exchange Student Coordinator to identify and enroll in online classes. This means that you would have the flexibility to view recorded lectures and engage in course content at a time convenient for you in your home country. However, you will need to keep track of due dates for assignments as those will be based on the date & time at our Flagstaff mountain campus.
