Generous gifts from our donors have made it possible to offer a variety of scholarship opportunities to students in the College of Health and Human Services as they pursue their healthcare degrees. Each scholarship is listed below, that includes the criteria and application submission guidelines.
Scholarships available to all CHHS students
Flagstaff Medical Center Health Professions Scholarship Accordion Closed
The Flagstaff Medical Center Health Professions Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time junior or senior, health professions or nursing undergraduate student, in the College of Health & Human Services. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required, must be a U.S. citizen, reside in northern Arizona, display evidence of commitment and service to health care, and consider working at FMC following graduation.
Criteria:
- majoring in an academic discipline within NAU’s College of Health and Human Services
- enrolled as a full-time (12 semester hours or more) student
- minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0=A) at time of selection
- U.S. citizen
- junior or senior level
- resident of the Northern Arizona region
- following graduation from the NAU College of Health and Human Services, the student is expected to consider working at Flagstaff Medical Center
- display evidence of commitment to the health care field by either volunteer work, community involvement, or similar contributions

David P. McElwain Health Professions Scholarship Accordion Closed
The David P. McElwain Health Professions Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time junior or senior, health professions or nursing undergraduate student, in the College of Health & Human Services. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and are expected to pursue a career in the health care field following graduation.
Criteria:
- majoring in an academic discipline within NAU’s College of Health and Human Services
- enrolled as a full-time (12 semester hours or more) student

Dr. Larry A. Mullins Endowed Scholarship for Health Care Administration Accordion Closed
The Larry A. Mullins DHA Scholarship was established in 2003 by the board of directors of Samaritan Health Services, Corvallis, OR. It was created in honor of Dr. Mullins, the President/CEO of Samaritan Health Services, upon completion of his doctoral degree in Health Care Administration (DHA) from the Medical University of South Carolina.
The scholarship fund is housed with the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, Corvallis, OR. Dr. Mullins chairs the selection committee for the scholarship. At least one scholarship of $1000 is awarded annually from the fund.
Eligibility:
- Be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a health care related field.
- Mullins scholarships are available to individuals without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, age, color, disability, or marital status.
- Note: special consideration will be given to applicants who are currently employed in the health care field, members or veterans of the U.S. military, and those who are willing to practice in Oregon or Arizona (veterans must submit a copy of their DD-214 Form 4 with the application). Special consideration will also be given to applicants who are currently attending one of the following institutions: Arizona State University, Glendale Community College, Linn Benton Community College, Medical University of South Carolina, Northern Arizona University, Oregon State University, and Western University of Health Sciences – COMP NW.
Application process and timeline:
- Application information is available to college financial aid/career planning staff, as well as on the Samaritan Health Services website.
- Completed applications are due the last Friday of April of each year. Scholarship recipient(s) will be announced in June.
- Scholarship funds will be mailed in July in the recipient’s name directly to the college/university indicated on the application. No funds will be released directly to the recipient.

Arnn Memorial Scholarship Accordion Closed

Athletic training scholarships
Michael F. Jarko Memorial Athletic Training Education Scholarship Accordion Closed
Requirements:
- Submit a letter of application that explains:
- why you’re deserving of this scholarship
- your career goals
- your future plans to contribute to the profession nationally or with the state organization
- what a college education means to you personally
- Have a minimum of a 3.30 college GPA.
- Be a first year student in the MSAT program at time of application (scholarship will be awarded for 2nd year in program).
- Submit two letters of recommendation, both from Certified Athletic Trainers.
- Demonstrate proof of membership in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
- Submit your letter of application, with GPA, proof of NATA membership, and recommendations to the ATEP Program Director in ONE paper document (not electronically).

Michael E. Nesbitt Sports Medicine Scholarship Accordion Closed
Awarded to a graduate AT student entering the 2nd year of the MSAT program (application occurs during 1st year in MSAT program).
Requirements:
- applicant must be nominated by a clinical preceptor or faculty member in the MSAT program
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
- Be a graduate student pursuing a career in athletic training
- Submit a reference list which includes at least 3 certified athletic trainers

Dental hygiene scholarships
Dental Hygiene Scholarship Accordion Closed
The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding a scholarship to one full-time student. This scholarship will be given for academic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA) and financial need. Applicant must be in good standing in the dental hygiene department.

Feugate & Mansfield Dental Hygiene Scholarship Accordion Closed
The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding a scholarship to dental hygiene students who meet one of the two following criteria:
- dental hygiene students who demonstrate financial need , scholastic ability, and service to the department, community, and/or profession of dentistry/dental hygiene, or
- beginning dental hygiene students who will commit to working in an Arizona-designated rural community for three years after graduation.

Kathleen D. Heiden Dental Hygiene Scholarship Accordion Closed
Available to an undergraduate student majoring in dental hygiene at NAU who demonstrates financial need.
Additional criteria:

- first preference to a member of the Navajo Tribe

Mansfield Fund to Support Dental Hygiene Student Global Engagement Accordion Closed
The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding a scholarship to a dental hygiene student who participates in clinical education experiences external to the Flagstaff campus environment. The awarded student should engage in interdisciplinary study aboard experiences, enabling them to work with faculty to provide critical healthcare services to underserved populations.
This fund shall be used to provide travel and other support for an NAU Dental Hygiene student who meets the following criteria:
- accepted into the NAU Dental Hygiene program and currently in good standing, as defined by the Dental Hygiene Chair
- selected to serve a student externship in Dental Hygiene
- gives volunteer time and service to NAU and/or to the Dental Hygiene profession
- demonstrates financial need

Martha V. Chapman Scholarship Accordion Closed
Established in honor of Martha Chapman, who was born and raised in Morenci, AZ. She received a degree in nursing from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. A former surgical nurse, she came to NAU when it was Arizona State College (ASC) in Flagstaff, where she was employed as the college nurse at ASC Health Center with Dr. Martin Fronske. She left the university and was employed as a school nurse in Flagstaff public schools from where she retired.

Established in memory of Betty Jean Laman by her family and friends. Betty Jean Laman came to school for a nursing degree after raising her family. She graduated 2nd in the class and was known as a “class mother”. Betty Jean was killed in an accident 2 years after her graduation.

Eleanor Joan Kellis Memorial Scholarship Accordion Closed
Established in loving memory of Eleanor Joan Kellis. Eleanor Kellis received her nursing degree from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Phoenix, AZ. Eleanor enjoyed adventure and helping others. She worked in a variety of areas of nursing and as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Children’s Hospital. She provided patient care at several hospitals and found her niche in Utilization Review. Joan’s father, brother, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law all received degrees from NAU.

- Deserving nursing student, to be decided by the School of Nursing scholarship committee in coordination with the NAU Financial Aid Office. No specific criteria.

Dawn M. Fenski- Lopez Memorial Scholarship Accordion Closed
Established by her husband in memory of Dawn Fenski-Lopez. Dawn began her career as a manufacturing associate with W. L. Gore & Associates, a medical device manufacturer. She spent the next 22 years with the company, eventually working her way up to the role of Foreign Regulatory Affairs Associate. Dawn’s work inspired in her, an interest in healthcare studies. She decided that returning to school to pursue a degree in nursing would broaden her understanding of the impact of medical devices on diseases and disorders of the body. Her goal was cut short when in 2002 she suffered a stroke which forced her to retire to focus on her rehabilitation. Dawn touched many lives in the Flagstaff community and developed lasting friendships with people from a number of different countries. It is in her memory and her love of life that our family created this scholarship. It is our hope that in some small way we can help others achieve one goal that Dawn was never able to complete.

Established for Barbara Cline. A 1969 graduate of NAU’s registered nurse’s program. She worked for over 20 years in Flagstaff’s nursing community, at FMC, and in a local doctor’s office.

- acquired mature judgment

Established by Dr. Lindquist, Medical Oncologist, and Avatar Master, to encourage nursing students to explore the area of oncology as a career choice, and to remind that as we give compassion to others, we must also remember to simultaneously give it to ourselves as caregivers.

Lisa Sechrist Lipke Nursing Scholarship Accordion Closed
Established by Jean and Gilbert Sechrist, M.D., in honor of their daughter Lisa Sechrist Lipke. The Sechrist family has a long history in the Flagstaff Medical community. Charles Sechrist (grandfather to Lisa), came to Flagstaff and co-founded the Flagstaff Hospital and was a physician-surgeon. Gilbert Sechrist, son of Charles, was a prominent pediatrician in Flagstaff until his retirement. Lisa followed in the families foot steps earning her Nursing degree from NAU in 1995. She has been a nurse in telemetry, medical/surgical, and pediatric sub-acute oncology. This scholarship is to honor this tradition and support the health of our communities.

Established by the Nicolls family to honor the character of Ruth and her life practices of demonstration of integrity and ethical life choices, while incorporating the ideals of community, commitment, and care within the health care profession. Ruth Nicolls taught in the NAU nursing program from 1979 to 2002.

Turner-Davis Scholarship Accordion Closed
Established by friends and family in loving memory of Corine Turner and Linda Davis that were killed by a hit & run driver. During Corine’s career she was a school nurse for Gila Bend High School for 30 years and implemented the Diabetes Prevention Program on the San Lucy Reservation. Linda, with her steadfastness, helped to build a successful family business and was a beacon of hope with her commitment to serve wherever she was needed. Together, they volunteered their time at school and community functions. An annual walk is held in memory of the two best friends. Proceeds are donated to the scholarship to embrace the women’s “pay it forward” philosophy.

Harold L. and Marion L. Elliott Scholarship Accordion Closed
Established by Harold and Marion Elliott as a tangible demonstration of their lifelong support and involvement in the education of the young people of Yuma, AZ. Both have their BA and Masters from NAU. Their devotion to education, and loyalty to NAU, translated into a number of volunteer leadership rolls for NAU. Each of them served as president of a major support organization of the University: Harold as president of the NAU Alumni Association and Marion as president of the NAU Foundation.

Student travel support Accordion Closed
If you are presenting at a conference, the College of Health and Human Services offers travel reimbursement up to $200 for approved applicants (no reimbursements for meals or incidentals). Applications will be accepted through April 15th of the academic year in which the travel takes place or until the funds have been awarded. Students who apply earlier will improve their chances of success.

Available to qualifying Physician Assistant Studies students only. Those who meet the minimum eligibility requirements will be contacted directly by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Accordion Closed
