The NARBHA Institute and Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation approached CHER in 2016 to conduct a comprehensive regional needs and assets assessment of health in northern Arizona. We are pleased to announce that the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has awarded Northern Arizona University and the Center for Health Equity Research $21.4 million to establish the Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative (SHERC), which will focus on increasing NAU’s basic biomedical, clinical, and behavioral health research capacity to address health disparities among diverse populations of our region. CHER Assistant Research Professor, Dr. Kristan Elwell has been involved in establishing a new and much-needed pediatric surgery wing at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi; it is the first center of its kind in the country. The Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care will help the hospital double the number of surgeries performed on children each year, and provides a four-bed intensive care unit. The Institute for Translational Research Education (ITRE) in Adolescent Drug Abuse is expanding to NAU, bringing opportunities for graduate students at NAU to learn about community-based research in this field, and to partner with local community agencies for a service learning project. Northern Arizona University contributed to a recent study that suggests sexual violence is widespread among college-age athletic men, and was linked to athletes’ attitudes towards women. CHER Director, Dr. Julie Baldwin, is a coauthor on the study and said “It’s a major public health issue. We need to address this. It’s disconcerting in some ways that these beliefs are still prevalent.”
CHER Assistant Research Professor, Dr. Emery Eaves, is first author on an upcoming article co-authored with Dr. Tim Behrens and colleagues. The article presents analysis of a large-scale survey of college students that shows relationships between meeting vigorous physical activity recommendations and key demographic, lifestyle, and personal characteristics.
