Faculty exchange opportunities


We offer many programs for faculty to grow professionally through research and instruction in other countries. Among them are programs sponsored by Northern Arizona University, Fulbright opportunities, and programs funded by other organizations.

Programs sponsored by Northern Arizona University


Short-term lecturing opportunities at partner universities in China and Vietnam

Eligibility

Northern Arizona University faculty from any discipline may apply to participate in this program.

Requirements

Northern Arizona University faculty members may provide lectures over one or two weeks at partner universities in China and Vietnam. The proposed program may include one week at one institution and the second week at a different institution.

Apart from the lectures to students, faculty are expected to interact with host faculty in the discipline and explore possibilities for teaching and scholarly collaboration.

Compensation

Faculty will receive:

  • housing, meals, ground transportation, and sightseeing at host institutions’ expense
  • a $2,000 stipend from the Center of International Education to subsidize the cost of travel to China and Vietnam

  • a statement of interest to that includes:
    • the areas in which lectures will be given
    • cities for which you may have a preference (within China and Vietnam)
    • a commitment to infuse insights gained during this experience into courses taught at Northern Arizona University

  • a more detailed outline of the topics the lectures will cover (this is important for review by the host institution)


Northern Arizona University Faculty Exchange Program

This opportunity aims to provide faculty to teach at partner institutions overseas.

Eligibility

This opportunity is available to tenured, tenure-track, or clinical faculty, as well as lecturers.

Requirements

  • The NAU faculty member must identify a faculty member from the partner institution who is able to teach the same courses that would otherwise be taught by the NAU faculty in the semester of the exchange.
  • The NAU faculty member must teach a course load comparable to what is taught at NAU or a load negotiated with the host institution.
  • The visiting faculty is expected to be in a similar academic discipline as the NAU faculty seeking the exchange.
  • The visiting faculty must submit appropriate documents (like a complete CV that includes courses taught) to the relevant NAU department(s) for review and approval.
  • The period of exchange may be for a semester or a year, but there must be coverage by the visiting faculty for the entire duration of the exchange.

Northern Arizona University Faculty-in-Residence Program

Eligibility

Northern Arizona University faculty from any discipline may apply to teach at a bilateral partner institution.

Requirements

  • Faculty will teach two courses at a partner university.
  • Faculty must recruit a minimum of 15 students to accompany them.
  • Northern Arizona University students must commit to enroll in two courses taught by Northern Arizona University faculty at host institution.
  • Students at host institution may enroll in Northern Arizona University faculty courses.

Compensation

Faculty will receive:

  • regular Northern Arizona University salary and benefits
  • free housing at host institution

University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) Visiting Professor Program

The USAC–Northern Arizona University partnerships allow NAU professors to teach courses at many USAC locations around the world. Faculty may commit for one semester or a summer program.

Fulbright programs

Fulbright is the flagship international education exchange program increasing mutual understanding among people from the United States and around the globe. Sponsored by the US government, Fulbright provides international travel, teaching, and research opportunities for our students, faculty members, and staff. Support and guidance for NAU applicants with the Fulbright application process is available through National and International Scholarships and Fellowships.


Fulbright core teaching/research program

The core Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 United States faculty overseas to teach and/or lecture each year. One in three applications is funded. Find out more about the core Fulbright Scholar Program.


Fulbright Distinguished Chairs program

The Fulbright Distinguished Chairs program is the most prestigious appointment in the Fulbright Scholar program. Awards are typically four months in length.

Eligibility

Candidates should be senior scholars and have a significant publication and teaching record.

Fulbright Specialist program

The Fulbright Specialist program promotes increased connections between United States and non-United States post-secondary academic institutions. It aims to encourage new activity that goes beyond the traditional Fulbright-sponsored lecturing and research.

The program provides short-term (two to six weeks) academic opportunities for United States faculty and professionals. Applications may be submitted throughout the year, and reviews are conducted eight times per year.

  • lecturing to graduate and undergraduate students
  • participating in or leading seminars and workshops
  • conducting teacher training workshops
  • developing and assessing academic curricula

Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship

The Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship funds fellowships through institutions of higher education for faculty members who propose to conduct research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies to improve their skill in languages and their knowledge of the culture of the people of these countries.

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad/Bilateral Projects

The aim of the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad/Bilateral Projects is to improve faculty’s understanding and knowledge of peoples and cultures of other countries.

There are seven to ten seminars, each four to six weeks in duration, with 14–16 participants in each seminar annually. Seminars are held exclusively in countries outside of Western Europe.

Eligibility

This program is intended for faculty in the social sciences and humanities.

Fulbright Schuman Program

The Fulbright Schuman Program, administered by the Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States, Belgium, and Luxembourg, is jointly financed by the US State Department and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission.

Requirements

The Fulbright Schuman Program awards grants to study, research, or lecture on the development of:

  • the European Union
  • the processes of European integration
  • United States and European Union relations

Grants are limited to projects dealing with US–EU relations or EU affairs.

Apply

Project proposals should focus on comparative perspectives or issues of common concern (either transatlantic or with reference to European Union policy). Proposals should address any topics of general concern, including but not limited to:

  • internal and external security
  • peace keeping
  • CFSP and NATO
  • information sharing
  • finance
  • trade
  • human rights
  • agricultural and environmental policies
  • energy
  • asylum
  • human trafficking
  • development
  • European Union enlargement

Title VI programs: Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad

Curriculum development team: this team spends four to six weeks in a foreign country acquiring resource material for curriculum development in a modern foreign language or area studies program.

Group research or study projects: a group of faculty from institutions of higher education, as well as graduate and undergraduate students, undertake research or study in a foreign country or region for three to 12 months.

Institute of International Education (IIE) Beijing and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Fellowships

In cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IIE Beijing is pleased to announce the following Visiting Professorship programs:


Visiting Professorships for Young International Scientists

These fellowships support collaborative scientific research opportunities in China for young scientists and provide financial support for individual young scientists to conduct cooperative research at one of the institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) for 12 months; potentially renewable for up to a further 12 months.

Requirements

Applicants for this fellowship must apply collaboratively. The research teams must include a scientist who:

  • is a citizen of a nation having formal diplomatic relations with China (Chinese citizens are not eligible)
  • was educated outside of China at the elementary school level
  • has a PhD
  • has strong communication skills in English
  • is under age 35, or else under age 40 with over five years of research experience

and Chinese collaborator(s) who:

  • are researcher(s) of CAS institutes
  • have a senior research position, and preferably a PhD
  • are engaged in a major research program
  • have facilities and capacity to conduct cooperative research with the visiting scientist

Scientists wishing to apply should begin by exploring research opportunities with potential collaborators within the Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Applications are submitted by the CAS institutes on behalf of the international scientist during two specific periods each year:

  • March 1 to 15
  • September 1 to 15

The grant will cover the recipient’s:

  • salary
  • daily living allowance
  • round-trip international airfare
  • health insurance

The amount of the grant and what it covers will be determined by CAS according to the length of the visit and the academic level of the visitor.
