Rules and regulations


At the NAU Campus Recreation Center, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of safety and professionalism. Our state-of-the-art facility offers a wide range of equipment and amenities to help you achieve your fitness goals. We ask that all members and guests abide by our rules and regulations to ensure that the center remains a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.

General rules

  • NAU ID must be used for facility access and equipment check-out.
  • Individuals may use the restrooms and changing rooms that correspond to their gender identity. Individuals who desire privacy are welcome to use the all-gender spaces.
  • All personal belongings must be stored in the provided cubbies or lockers.
  • Only water/sealed containers are permitted throughout the facility. Food and other drinks are limited to special events.
  • Shoes and clothing that provide full coverage are required at all times throughout the facility.
  • For privacy, safety, and courtesy purposes, please refrain from excessive cell phone use in all fitness areas, locker rooms, and restrooms.
  • Photos and videos are strictly prohibited in all areas of the facility without prior approval.
  • The use of profanity or abusive language will result in loss of privileges.
  • Our facility does not allow minors except for approved groups.
  • Gum is prohibited throughout the facility.
  • Immediately report all injuries and incidents to the Campus Recreation staff.

Additional rules

Climbing wall

  • Always check in at the climbing wall desk before using the facility.
  • NAU Outdoor Adventures belay certification is required to belay.
  • Only climbing equipment and water bottles are allowed in the climbing gym area.
  • A shirt and shoes are required at all times.
  • Only soft-sole, closed-toe, and climbing shoes are allowed on the wall.
  • Keep fingers out of bolt hangers and quickdraws.

Bouldering

  • Keep hands below the bouldering line.
  • Topping out on the bouldering cave is not permitted.
  • Boulderers yield to top-rope climbers.
  • Downclimb from all routes when possible.

Racquetball courts

  • Eye protection is recommended at all times and is available for checkout at the Recreation Center front desk.
  • Proper fitness attire must be worn at all times, including shirts and non-marking closed-toed shoes.
  • Scheduled activities and events have priority.

Outside track

  • Scheduled activities and events have priority. The field is not available for use.
  • Track use is limited to foot traffic and manual wheelchair use only, and is available during designated hours.

Courtyard

  • Scheduled activities and events have priority.
  • Reservations must be requested at least 10 business days in advance.
  • Non-scheduled times are open for informal use.
  • Proper fitness attire and shoes must be worn at all times.

Gyms

  • No dunking.
  • Proper fitness attire must be worn at all times, including shirts and non-marking closed-toed shoes.
  • Use of profanity or abusive language will result in loss of privileges.
  • Challenge court rules apply when others are waiting.
  • Scheduled activities and events have priority. Non-scheduled times are open for informal use.

Weight room

  • All personal belongings must be stored in the provided cubbies or lockers.
  • Proper fitness attire must be worn at all times. The following items are not permitted:
    • Cleats, spikes, dresses, sandals, open-toed shoes, and shoes with large openings (Crocs)
  • Collars must be used at all times.
  • Standing on benches or other upholstered equipment, slamming/dropping weights, and leaning free weights against equipment, walls, or mirrors is prohibited.
    • Please return all equipment to appropriate storage.
  • Chalk is prohibited.
  • Aggressive behavior including excessive yelling/grunting will not be tolerated.
  • Stretching is limited to designated areas.
  • Olympic-style lifts are limited to the power cages and half racks.
    • Olympic lifts include cleans, clean and jerk, push press, and deadlifts.
    • Snatches are prohibited.
    • Only RDL Olympic lifts are permitted with dumbbells.
  • Personal training in this facility is only available through Campus Recreation.
  • Report all equipment issues to Campus Recreation staff.
  • Direct all questions regarding equipment use to Campus Recreation staff.
