2018 Jazz Festival
February 22-24, 2018
The NAU Jazz Festival is a non-competitive arena for middle school, high school, and junior college musicians. This type of festival creates a relaxed atmosphere that promotes education as opposed to competition. Big bands and combos perform for adjudicators to receive ratings and/or comments. Following the performances each ensemble will participate in feedback clinics with one of our esteemed adjudicators.
This year will be the 56th annual NAU Jazz Festival. Approximately 60 bands will perform in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium over the 3 days of the festival. Participating band performances and scheduled clinics are free and open to the public. Please join us in supporting the talented students attending and performing at the festival.
This year’s festival will feature saxophone legend, Joel Frahm. Joel is a mainstay in the NYC jazz scene and has been active as a band leader, composer, educator, and side-man performing with jazz luminaries such as Maynard Ferguson, Larry Goldings, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jane Monheit, Kenny Barron, and countless others. While growing up in Hartford Connecticut, Joel began a long-standing musical relationship with pianist Brad Mehldau which has led to countless exciting performances and recordings over the years. Joel is also in high demand as an educator, collaborating with conservatories and universities internationally in addition to his private studio in NYC.
Joel Frahm will give an open masterclass on Friday, February 23rd at 1:00 pm in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium. The clinic is free and open to the public. Our Guest Artist Concert will also be Friday, February 23rd at 8:00 p.m. featuring Joel with NAU Jazz Ensemble One in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium.
Tickets to the Guest Artist Concert will be available through the Central Ticket Office.
