Normally, the College of Arts and Letters honors its nominees for Outstanding Graduating Senior with a banquet. Since that’s not possible this year, we’re letting the public get to know the honorees here on our website.
Kacie Debevc is the nominee for the Department of Theatre. She came to NAU from Las Vegas, Nev., and is a theatre performance major with a minor in arts and cultural management. While here, she was a part of the Native Bridge Program, the Arizona Playmakers, and the improvisational troupe NAUghty Bits. She has also worked as an events promotions assistant for the Department of Theatre.
Kacie’s love of theatre started in the drama department at Centennial High School. She decided to check out NAU on the advice of an alum from her high school. “When I went to NAU’s scholarship auditions, I fell in love with the campus and the department immediately,” she said. The feeling must have been mutual, because she was offered one of the program’s most prestigious scholarships, the Blue Chip.
Kacie’s professor praised her skill with choreography in her nomination, noting that she choreographed one show and assisted with another. She also performed a variety of roles in department productions.
Kacie’s favorite class during her time at NAU differed from those performances though. Puppetry was my favorite class, because it was collaborative with all areas of Theatre: Technical, Theatre Studies and Performance,” she said.
Theatre taught Kacie important lessons about how to hear criticism while not taking it to heart. She said it was important to learn how to remain confident when taking critiques about her work. “At the end of the day, I am doing my best and I’m happy,” she said.
Kacie is set to move back home to Las Vegas upon graduation. She will pursue acting on the side while continuing to work for Starbucks. She also has plans to return to her high school and assist with drama classes and shows. She’s happy to return to familiar grounds, but said she’ll miss the people she met while at NAU. “To everyone who has seen my journey and helped me grow, thank you!”
