Certificate in Innovative Thinking and Problem Solving
This NAU certificate program will give students of all majors a competitive edge in the job market. Employers are looking for students who can think and act in creative, innovative ways, and through this program at Northern Arizona University, students will become leaders in teamwork and in crossing disciplinary boundaries to achieve real-world results. Students can complete the certificate by taking 15 units, and may take up to 21 units, if they wish.
FYS 121: Innovations and Design Thinking
ITG 201: Ideation
ITG 301: Writing for Innovation
ITG 490/497: Culminating experience in Innovation
ITG 408: Fieldwork and/or Internship
ITG 208: Experiential Education Experience
Interdisciplinary electives: students may take these or suggest new and innovative courses to take for elective credit.
The assignments in this course all lead to products that will be of value in getting the startup moving, and that students can take away with them. These include an analysis of startup and ongoing business costs, a basic business plan, an identification of the target market and competitive space, a distribution strategy, a marketing sample, an operations graphic. All of them culminate in the last assignment, which is a 5-minute PowerPoint presentation aimed at potential investors.
