Northern Arizona University students conduct environmental research in new summer program at Historic Hat Ranch

  Jay Wells, an undergraduate at NAU studying geology, fills a mini disk infiltrometer to measure how quickly water is absorbed into the soil as part of his research project studying invasive plant species and soil property correlations at the Historic Hat Ranch on Thursday, June 20. Mark Salvatore, associate chair of NAU’s Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science, said the program is meant to help students explore different areas of study early in their higher education and show that skills are transferable between the sciences. Salvatore and Center for STEM Teaching and Learning co-director Ron Gray were the program coordinators.
