Happy Veteran’s Day! NAU Art Museum extends its appreciation to all members of our military, past, and present, for your service and sacrifice.
In light of Veteran’s Day, we shine a spotlight on this Navajo Code Talkers monument made by renowned artist and NAU alumnus RC Gorman to commemorate the 50th anniversary of World War II. This monument was officially unveiled exactly 25 years ago, on Veteran’s Day in 1995.
The sculpture is dedicated to the Navajo Code Talkers, 400 Navajo marines who used their native language to communicate and avoid the Japanese military from interpreting their messages.
The monument is modeled after Carl Gorman, RC Gorman’s father, one of the original Navajo Code Talkers.
