Jun Kaneko is a Japanese artist and United States resident, who has created a series of sculptures which he has deemed “Dango,” a Japanese word meaning dumpling. They range in size from small hand-held pieces up to eight feet in height! In our upcoming exhibition, we have two Dango pieces. Although neither are at the extremes in terms of size, they are drastically different in style and color.
Prominently shown in the foreground of the first picture is Dango (2013), which is the larger of the two Dango sculptures. In this piece, Kaneko combined crisp lines between the blue square and the surrounding colors, and the black stripe bleeding into the red.
The second image is a closer look at how clean the lines are on the borders of the blue square, along with some of the bleeding from the black glaze. The clear finish glaze itself is lightly cracked all over the piece, adding texture to an otherwise fairly smooth artwork.
